Thanks Alex..but that is not the issue I had..

I was merely supporting Steakys thought, In addition, if the tenant wants to move afterwards, if the landlord agrees, she or he can find another person to takeover the lease. No one is force to live there.

Oh I see :D...

This is one good option in some situations...But not in the one we were discussing.

I am glad you find it helpful. I hope those options work for you.

From my own experience I have learned that it is so important to know the information directly from the source. And researching The Tenant and Landlord Board of the location you are moving to in Canada will provide the at most correct and up-to-date information of what your options are in terms of renting... because they are the ones who enforce the law(rights and responsibilities)

Maybe when Steaky came to Canada this is how things were done, but today In Ontario it is illegal for the landlord to ask for more than 2 months rent;
As well as it is illegal to refuse to rent to newcomers because they do not have a Canadian credit history or a guarantor.
@ Foodie: Thank you for your support

@ Alex: As the topic suggest - "Settlement help - BC", what is done in Ontario might not be the same in BC. Also, it's not illegal for any potential tenant to pay paying more than 2 months rent in advance.

If you pay $7,000 for 6 months rent, and find that your neighbor is making noise every night, not letting you sleep and you choose to move after 2 months; the landlord might not want to give you back the remaining balance of $4,666... and what do you do then if there is none that will take the lease from you?
Are you suggesting people to take airbnb(s) to take advantage of short term rentals?

Steaky...My point is to share useful information that can help new immigrants succeed and be happy... and stay away from unnecessary complications.

In BC the law is just as strict in protecting tenants, as it firmly states that it is illegal for a landlord to ask for more than 50% of one months rent as a deposit (above the 2 months rent). But as we both agree, it is good to look into the location you are moving to, to see what your right are. ;)

P.S. Please don't misunderstand the words. It is illegal for the landlord to ask, but not for the tenant to give.

I don't give advice. (advice is bad) It may work for some and ruin things for others.

I give options. I think its better to give the official information so people can be informed when they choose what works for them. Especially because things change often in Canada, and only the source of the information will have the most accurate updates.

Airbnb is one option out of 100's

I don't agree advice (in general) is bad. In fact, I think every individual can decide whether the advice can work for them or ruin things. Certain things wouldn't have any official information to begin with.

So what is your source with regards to airbnb? How about you list out the 100 options as alternative to airbnb? :D
