Sharing my Citizenship Oath Ceremony and Urgent Passport application experience.
Oath Ceremony experience:
Ceremony was scheduled for Aug 20th, 9 am in Surrey BC.
On the oath day, reached the IRCC building and parked (make sure to give atleast 3hrs for the parking meter from the official time of your oath time). IRCC clerk mentioned doors will be opened only at 830 am.
At 830 am, IRCC clerk came and separated candidates and family members into different lines. Family members went in first and got seated in the main hall in family area. Next, candidates were escorted into the staging area. After about 5 mins, each candidate was asked to show the necessary documents to verify. In my case it was Oath Invitation letter, PR card and my current Passport. CoPR was not asked for me nor any Drivers license. I do not have any BC cards like license or health card. I had US drivers license only.
Once documents are verified each one of us are sent to the main hall and each seat has a number and we sat in the designated seat assigned to us (seat # is also on the invitation letter). There were two clerks who helped each of us guide to our respective chairs. I think there were around 70+ oath takers for 9 am slot.
NOTE: Once majority of the candidates were seated, I saw one of the clerk and spoke with her in person my reason for applying for passport same day (need to go to US for work). Clerk said no guarantees but told we will do what we can. Took a note of my last name and seat #.
Finally around 915am Judge came in. Moving speech about Canada and history and all the great stuff. Then oath in English and French by all. Clerks went around the hall to ensure that we are reading the oath.
Once Oath was done, it was followed by second round of signatures by each candidate and then proceed to receive our paper Citizenship Certificate from judge in a plastic cover.
NOTE: One last time I again spoke/reminded clerk to see what they can do to expedite my application to be in the system earlier than 2 days as I have a need for urgent passport. She mentioned she will do what she can and try to feed into the system by 230pm.
Overall a very smooth process. We all were out of the building by 1030am. Super happy and it took me a full 12 months from AOR to Oath date. I am a Canadian!!!
Urgent Passport Application experience: Please note, this is my experience, and not all could face the same situation
I took a gamble and went to Passport Office in Surrey that offers Urgent Passport application services around 1pm same afternoon (Aug 20th). I had all my documents, photos, signatures etc. all set and ready a day before.
Stood in line, documents check was complete and was a given a token. Immediately I was called to a counter (may be because its less crowded around 1pm I think)
The passport officer asked for my application and inquired why I need it urgently. I provided the officer with my US employment letter and another custom-made letter from employer which states that I am needed inside US for executing one of the projects (I also had my flight itinerary but I officer did not ask for it).
Officer looked at both letters and agreed to proceed to urgent processing. Photos, and information on passport application were quickly checked. Officer took my US Drivers license, my current passport, and Canada Citizenship certificate. Paid the $270 fees. I was asked to sit down in the hall to wait and he proceeded to verify the application.
2 mins later, I was called to the counter again and officer said, since I got the citizenship earlier this morning, its not yet registered in their system and he has asked me to wait for 2 days atleast. Then we had a small discussion on what I spoke with clerk at Oath ceremony and how she said it could be in the system by 230pm.
Realizing my need for an Urgent Passport, passport officer said I will proceed with the application, but certificate must be in the system, until then they cannot issue the passport but he said he will proceed with other verifications – which I really appreciated him for. I left the building but with a hope that by 3pm my certificate would have been updated into the system.
In the meantime, my guarantor and references that verification is complete (they received phone calls). Then I went inside and met the same officer and he mentioned that around 230pm or so, my certificate was in the system, which is excellent news for me. Officer said that he is processing the application and can pick up the passport next day at 1pm. I had a small talk with him and appreciated his kind gesture on helping to process my application.
Aug 21: 1pm – I was promptly there and collected my 10- year passport.
Overall excellent experience at the Passport center on how the officer from previous day went extra mile, showed empathy and proceeded to do the things at such a fast pace
