It means that police and security checks have started on your file in Sydney office. Once these checks are completed and passed, only then your file will be transferred to your local office for eligibility checks, test invite and oath

IRCC's definition of In process. Access this by clicking the link below the last line of your ECAS status.

Application In Process
Your file has been sent to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) office closest to your home for processing.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada officials will complete the necessary steps to make a decision on your application. If additional information or documents are needed, you will be contacted.

If you are between the ages of 18 and 54, you will have to meet the knowledge and language requirements for citizenship. The citizenship test will determine if you meet the knowledge requirements for citizenship. You will be notified by mail about the time and place of your test. Adult applicants who are 55 years old or older are not required to take the citizenship test.

An interview with a citizenship officer or citizenship judge may also be required. Should this be necessary, you will be notified by mail about the time and place of your interview.

Application Withdrawn
If you wish to withdraw your application, you must advise us before a decision on your application has been made.

Thank you. This clarification was interesting and good to know. In the application guide forum (link is copied below), it says that submission to the local office is after background check is done in Sydney. I’m thinking can we conclude from “in process” status that the application has passed the risk of being a “non-routine” application? (Apparently non-routine applicants wil be asked to send extra documents and processing time is significantly longer).

Well if you see GCMS notes on your file, it will follow the same steps... Criminality checks, Security Cheks as both these come under background checks. Once both are completed and passed, only then your file is transferred to Local visa office and Eligibility checks, test and oath are conducted.

I just got a letter on 16 FEB 2021 from IRCC "APPLICATION FOR CANADIAN CITIZENSHIP". First line:

"This is to acknowledge receipt of your application for Canadian Citizenship. We will review you application and supporting documents and will contact you if additional information is required."

It seems this is the letter that was supposed to be sent out on DEC 17.

Citizenship
  1. We received your application for Canadian citizenship (grant of citizenship) on September 28, 2020.
  2. We sent you correspondence acknowledging receipt of your application(s), and a study book called Discover Canada on December 17, 2020.
  3. We started processing your application on February 12, 2021.

Yes. My application was showing received on eCAS, but when I called them, the agent told me that it was In Process. It took a couple of weeks for the eCAS status to actually update to In process.

You should be fine as long as you have eCAS access and it shows that the application was received.

And call IRCC and ask if they have an application number that you could use for reference. If your application is in process, they would have issued one. Its's a 1o character number in the format CXXXXXXXXX.

Application In Processing - Feb 25th.
Have been asked to submit the finger prints electronically. I live in Calgary, so it seems the applications are being processed at a better pace these days.
