It's unlikely that files are transferred physically. It's either electronic transfer or just uploaded on to the website and accessed by the local office as and when required.

I always thought that files are transferred physically because when applicants go for the test, interview, and oath taking, the officer needs the copies and photos right?

True, because a person that I know, he got the pictures back that he sent along with the application, on the test day.

Hi,
I applied on 23rd September 2018 and the application was received on 28th September.
I haven’t received any update.
I’m unable to log in on the CIC using my PR card number or Unique ID number.

I’m a little concerned. When should I be expecting to receive an acknowledgement letter or email?

Most probably next week you will get AOR. There is no reason for any worry.
