If the relationship breaks up and IRCC finds out, they will remove the co-signer from the application. A spouse / common law partner can only co-sign if they are in a relationship with the sponsor.

You need to inform IRCC if there is any change to the family. Is he aware that he will be financially responsible for you for 20 years? Most exes would not be interested in that. Although you say you can cover your costs with your pension, costs can really escalate once parents get older or get sick. You may not be aware that you will have to pay for health supplies if you remain at home like walkers, hospital beds, hearing aids, etc. or if you end up in longterm care there is a monthly bed fee. Canadians direct their monthly pension to cover the fee but if you don't receive a pension your family has to pay the approximately $1000/month.
