Hi guys,

A CIC agent told me that I should send the original expired PR card with my application since it's expired. And the photocopy of my current PR card.

No where on the instruction guide says that. Can I still keep my expired PR card?

Thanks

Whenever I had a tricky question, I always called the CIC call centre a few times, to speak to different agents and compare answers.

You may have misunderstood this agent. Since you have to send photocopies of your travel documents, even expired ones that you've renewed within the previous 4 to 6 years (depending upon when you apply), perhaps what s/he meant was that you should also send a photocopy of your expired PR card along with a photocopy of your current PR card, just as you have to send photocopies of expired and current passports.

But I would ask another agent, and see if you get that same answer.

I remember when I renewed my PR card in 2012, I had to send the old one back. How come you still have the old one?

Ah, that's a good question. I haven't had to renew my PR card yet, so I didn't know the process. Perhaps that is what the agent meant: you need to turn in your old PR card.

Thanks for your replies.

I still have the old one because my new one was mailed out to me.

I did call another agent and he said don't worry about it. So I didn't even include the photocopy of the expired one with my application just mailed out today...

This was the rule back in the day. Currently, expired PR cards remain in our possession and CIC asks us, in the letter that comes with the new PR Card, to destroy them once we receive the new one.

You should've destroyed your old one upon receiving the new one. It's in the letter that comes with the new card.

I see. I will destroy the old card.
