Hello Guys!!

I have 2.5 years of work experience with a multinational company in the role relevant to my professional qualification But currently i am self-employed and own a trading business as a sole proprietor.

should i show 3.5 years of work experience or i should simply exclude the self employed portion of my experience in the express entry profile.

You may use either or both especially if it's relevant to the NOC code that you're applying for.

I have a friend who both claimed his employed and self-employed work experience.

For the self-employed work experience, he requested his clients to provide a reference letter to him, stressing that he's been giving his services to them with detailed breakdown of work/services.

Hello gabbana,

Did your friend get any point for self employment.
I dont think you can get points for self employment

Thanks

You can certainly gain points for self-employment.

The challenge is to prove such experience conclusively to CIC. CIC requires the following documents as proof of self-employment.

if the applicant is self-employed, articles of incorporation or other evidence of business ownership, evidence of self-employment income, and documentation from third-party individuals indicating the service provided along with payment details (self-declared main duties or affidavits are not acceptable proof of self-employed work experience).

You obviously get points under self employment. I applied under self-employed and got points for work experience.

Really? That's strange. I also have 3 years work experience, applied under fsw and incorporated. I checked the self-employed box and immediately got points for it.

Anya & Asvid !!

Do i need to prove my self-employed work experience as relevant to my NOC code ?? if yes, I have a professional qualification in accountancy so its related with business and financial matters but my business is a sort of trading business in which i sell agricultural products i.e wheat, rice & cotton to the mills. since its a pure business and i did the accounting of my business myself. Can i claim it be related to my NOC code of accountancy ??

what sort of documentry evidence should i collect ? Does my business bank statement along with reference letters from my costumers for the business i do with them suffice ???

For self-employed work experience, mark my words: Reference letters are not enough. Provide bank details for whatever years, showing wire transfers from your clients who provided you with a reference letter. Provide some invoices you issued for those clients. Provide your tax certificates/statements for the given period of time. Otherwise, your application will be deemed incomplete and returned to you. That's what happened to me last year. You are welcome.

Your work experience needs to be related to your NOC code and not your professional certification so if your job was buying and selling your NOC should be related to buying and selling. For my application I provided a reference letter from my client, 6 months business bank account statements, 6 months invoice, 6 months payslips and the certificate of incorporation for my business showing that I'm the owner. Therefore as Haznac advised only a reference letter and bank statement wouldn't suffice.

Sorry just seeing your message. Yes I applied under EE and yes I checked the self employed box. My experience was in the UK though so maybe it has to do with your experience being in Canada? I don't know, just a wild guess.

Hello Anya, how about the period working as self employed but without customers? 3-4 months after register the company, working on our own website, social media, promotions... can count this time too? Or only from the time i have customers and get paid? Also in the reference letters must show the working hours right? How about if i had a customer for 5 months working 20 hour/week, it won't count as working experience because is less than full time jobb (30 h/week)?
Thank you!

haznac, i'm assuming you mean a sample of statements/references letters? i have way too many to count.
