Hello All,

Please, I need your advice and help.

I am from Nigeria. In December 2017, I left Northern Nigeria for the South West after narrowly escaping deaths many times, from bomb blasts, ethnic and religious crises over the years. My return to the south now gets me closer to my extended family members since I am from the South West. The family is polygamous and my parents are late while I am single.

Before I left the North, there was a time I took very ill and I was brought from the North to my half-sister in the South West. She took me to an herbalist, contrary to my faith and religion (I am a Christian). There was only a little or no restraint I could put up because I was in-between life and death. At the herbalist's place, a lot of rituals and sacrifices were done on my behalf. I was terribly incised all over my body from the crown of my head to the sole of my feet, and round about my body (many of the marks are still visible as evidence). I was even made to swallow the blade used for the incision and I was unconsciously made to make an oath, which I did not know until later. After all these and when I got better I returned to the North.

Not long after, my half-sister continued to call me that I will have to renew the rituals every year and that I have been betrothed to the herbalist, so I need to be coming there once in a while until I finally relocate. I told her that I was never and not interested and that I will not renew any ritual or marry an herbalist. I am a Christian and that has not changed and will never change. She told me that the herbalist said I will die if I do not comply. When she got to know that I am now in the South-West, very close to the town where she and the herbalist live (since that's where I got a job), she intensified the pressure for me to come over but I refused and I changed my accommodation and also blocked her line and her children's lines. Up till now none of my family members know where I live but I am afraid the woman might trace me to my current place of work. I am also afraid something bad may happen to me if she finds me. So I am thinking of applying for asylum in Canada. I can not also return to the North due to the high level of insecurity. Even at the South West, the spate of kidnapping, especially of people in my profession, is increasing, and the spread of the herdsmen attacks across Nigeria is so frightening.

Please, are my reasons tenable for application for asylum? If not, please, what can I do? I need to find my way out of this place as soon as I can.

Thank you.

You can’t actually apply for asylum to Canada unless you are in Canada to do so. You would have to obtain a TRV and claim asylum at the POE or after your arrival.

Alternately, you could leave Nigeria to a third country, apply to the UNHCR as a refugee and wait to see where you are relocated (if you ever are relocated). No choice in where you get resettled.

You can also look into immigrating through Express Entry (EE) or Provincial Nomination (PNP).

Dear Buletruck. I really appreciate your advice. However, I will like to know if my reasons for asylum are tenable.

Secondly, I considered express entry and POP but that sounds like a game of chance. I initially wanted to apply for the Manitoba PNP but I do not have a friend who is a permanent resident in Manitoba as required. Besides, My IELTS is academic, so I will have to sit for the General training test. Altogether, that I suppose will take some time and presently my state of mind is not stable enough for the long wait.

Please, In have another question. Canada Visitor's Visa application requires that I get a letter from my employer which put me at the mercy if my employer to permit me or not. And even if they permit me, I will only be released for my four weeks annual leave. Please is it possible to apply for asylum inside Canada within these few weeks?

Another concern is that I don't even have anyone in Canada who can host me for the period of the asylum application and processing. I can afford to book cheap room for about two weeks on arrival but how to continue to survive till after the asylum application decision is what bothers me. Can you or anyone else advise me on how I can go about this challenge? Is it possible to get a charity organization or something to invite me and help.me with accomodation? Please help clear my ignorance.

Why Canada? There are so many other countries closer to Nigeria that provide asylum and recognized safe zones of the UN.

1.Also if a decision was to be made, you have to prove you could not relocate to another place in Nigeria.
2.There is also a state/central government in Nigeria that you can seek help from. Your issue isn't with the government.

These 2 reasons are very common for refusal in many Nigerian asylum cases in Canada, especially under cases where the applicant is in fear of female genital mutilation, and family issues. Most cases that make it though have to do with ethnic issues, where the government won't assist, or worse; is the abuser, such as the case with herdsmen.

Thanks so much Buletruck.

If you have very little savings you won’t be able to get a visa to enter Canada.

Why might you not be accepted? There is the simple fact Nigeria is a big place. The first question you will be asked is why did you simply did not move away. You mean to tell us some herbalist is going to chase you around the country; for WHAT? To Canadian ears your story is simply not believable. At least to my Canadian ears.
Asylum is a seriously hard thing to do. Look below at the 2019 numbers. Very few are accepted. Those numbers are for the whole world:

I recall you asking this before. What are you doing; shopping the question around? The answers will be the same as before.
