hello i have some questions about security and backround checks...what do they mean?we get for example a police clearance so the can see the applicant has no criminal record.is this the security check?backround check is if someone lived more than 6 months in another country?
about our case i am a little bit confused:
my husband is Turkish and he has only been in Greece for 4 times every time for 10 days just to see me.will they check this too and if yes with what way?what services do they use?
will they also check hıs educatıonal backround?and his working experience?
do u thınk that it will take a lot of time who has just been as a turıst ın another country?

Do your husband have a criminal record? Did he have a criminal record ? If not nothing to worry about. If he did at some time they will do a background check and further investigate and see what that crime was and if he is admissible to Canada. No the police clearance is not the back ground check I have no idea in which way they check ....

I am under the impression that CIC does its own background/security check. Yes, we send them police certificates and what not, but who's to say there' isn' one crook amongst us who forged his/her documents? I don't think CIC takes our word for it.

I think I've heard on this forum of cases where people got in a bit of trouble because they did not disclose anything in the form where they ask you if you've ever been detained or served time or something like that, because their police certificate didn't say anything. But CIC found out that this person had actually been detained once, or something. Or people get caught for not disclosing the fact that they were refused a visa somewhere or were deported from some country years ago. CIC finds out. How? I guess they ask the relevant authorities of these countries.

Basically, the security/background check means they are verifying that all the information you gave them is correct. I thought my case would take extra long because I've spent most of my life outside my home country, and I also had an issue with a Russian Police Certificate, but my case went through fairly quickly. I don't think they pay much attention to vacations, but they would probably check up on places where your husband was working or studying. I don't think they care about where he went to school or what his grades were, or where he worked. The important things for them is that he has not committed a crime anywhere in the world, and that he has never been in any kind of trouble with any border authorities. In your shoes, I wouldn't worry if your husband has never been denied entry to a country, hasn't violated any visa restrictions, and has not committed a crime.

CIC will do their own checks and make requests to the countries the applicant has resided in for additional checks. How easily it is for CIC to get these records from these countries (lots of times depends on the relationship Canada has with them) often contributes to the processing time.

The background/security check is also completed by departments outside of CIC, including CSIS. It's not just "criminal" things they look for but also links to certain government/political groups, if he did mandatory military service or ever served in the military, if he travelled extensively to any other countries, if his name is similar to some one on the Watch List, etc.

Agree with keesio, though, in my case, I was surprised because I thought the Russian authorities would be extra uncooperative especially the past few months! It wasn't long after that plane was shot down in Ukraine, and Canada had just started sanctions against Russia so I was afraid it was going to take a really long time...

P.S. "resided" typically means more than 6 months.

It's Canada's intelligence agency. It's like the CIA for the US or MI5 for the UK.

You are actually fortunate.... it used to take a long time to get information from Russia. There were a few people sponsoring spouses from Russia in the past and many who ordered their notes found that CIC was stuck on waiting for a response from Russian intelligence regarding background checks.
