My husband has been stuck in Background Checks for 21 months. Today we rec'd email requesting a 2nd interview. I know that usually the second interview is also called a security interview and it has to do with background checks. Has anyone been through this? Any advise?? Is this serious?? I am scared that they will reject him, since nothing has gone our way since we filed the application. Will we know right away if he is approved or declined? Any advise will be greatly appreciated. He is going to his interview in Vienna since it is an outland application.

Hi Krofnica

I have no experience with this except that I have heard of others called for background check interviews. I would take it as a good thing. Your husband knows his history so he should be able to figure out what may be raising red flags. Any ideas?? I say be happy that they're giving him a chance to explain whatever they are concerned about.

As to whether they will give you a yes or no on the spot it seems to vary BUT if it's relating to his background check that is the final phase of the application so if they are satisfied by his responses they may well issue the visa right then.

Good luck!

Yes I had a Security interview , did your letter/email say intelligence would be conducting the interview ?
No need to be scared, theres something that has alarmed CIC so they probably passed your file for an intelligence request.

Now DO NOT lie to these people , they already know information, they just want clarification on what they know !

Thanks for the replies. No it did not say that the interview will be conducted by security intelligent. It said that after reviewing his application they require an interview to decide his inadmissibility to Canada. We know what the issues are. First of all my husband is a Serb who was born and raised in Croatia. He was there during the war and he also attended mandatory military, even though he had no contact with the war. Also he has traveled all over the world. His passport is completely stamped and I have heard that this is a red flag. They probably want to know why he has been in so many countries. I know that this is a good thing, but still am nervous because it basically means either they accept his app or decline it. In 2 months we will know.

OK , glad you know why the Security interview has been requested , I too understood why when I was called in .....

I will let you know now though, it is NOT up to the intelligence officer to make a decision then and there at the interview , he/she only asks questions about your past ,present history with what ever involvement one has had with military, politics or illegal associations... They then evaluate your answers and they then forward them to their boss for further /deeper checks...the checks can be from 1 month -14 month ..

If you need any more help feel free to ask...I am now into my 7 month of waiting to hear whether I am admissable or not.

Thanks for your reply. Is your application inland? My husband had his 1st interview 2 years ago and that's when they started his background checks. So 2 years of digging and now they want a security interview. I really hope that they don't need another year to make their decision. The app originally was only going to take 6-9 months, but this is our luck. I hope you get good news soon.

I would suggest ordering your CAIPS notes so that you are aware of what is being flagged as a problem.

For requesting CAIPS Notes:

1) IMM 5563 - Access to information and personal information request:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5563B.pdf

2) IMM 5476 - USE OF REPRESENTATIVE FORM:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5476E.PDF

:)

Our app is outland so my husband is back home waiting. I did order the caips notes 2 weeks ago so it should arrive by xmas. Hopefully there will be info on there, even though we know why they r calling him for security interview.

Hi Krofnica
Since it is about your husband ,it has to be something very serious for them to reject the application. Unlike other countries ,Canada values the unity of a family, they will do their best to accommodate you.
Just take the advice ,be truthful as you know your background better than any one else. The good thing is they are calling him for a 2nd interview.

All the best

Hope you have better luck than me with your caips notes, I oredered FOSS and recieved them in October , they never gave me any indication as why a security interview was requested , only that security checks were requested in March 2009, 5 months before my spousal interview ...odd !!!

I guess CIC has requuested your security check as your app is outland so CSIS ( Canadian security inteligence service ) only interview inland . Keep me updated with your progress . :)

Tell your hubby to keep calm and be assertive at the interview , do not question the interviewer , and do not make them angry ....just answer the questions calmly and positively.

He should sail through no problem as long as he has been open with them from the start....

Good luck :)

PS , you know what , this might not even be a security interview , it may be just a formal interview ...dont worry !

thanks :D I'm feeling much better. I do think they are going to ask him about his military involvement since they asked him to bring along his military book. He already had 1 interview so I am pretty sure that this is a security interview. I hope he stays calm since I know the interviews can be frustrating.

They are frustrating yes , you know what, when we introduced our selves, the officer was very polite I guess trying to calm me down before he even began, he thanked me for attending the interview and then went on to say I didnt have to attend  then he explained he was going to ask some very personal questions and some awkward questions, and to take my time answering them. The officer was not unpleasant at all , he was very firm but very patient. I even called a break half way through which he didnt mind.

Once the interview is through , after a period of time it is passed to the minister of CIC for him to make the decision. That is what the intelligence officer told me.

Dont get confused with Background/Security checks, Security checks is one of the 3 last admissable checks to Canada,

1; medical
2; criminalty ( RCMP)
3; security

Background checks are conducted in your first stage of approval aplication.
