I have lived in Halifax since 2010. What do you want to know
Hi NetMecca,

I am coming to Halifax after 15 days. Could you please suggest me to find a room at reasonable rate in nice area?

Also, I heard that the tick bites are common in Halifax which spread Lyme disease, is it right or just a myth ?

Regards!

look on airbnb for a short term stay. There are a few motels. Comfort Inn is not too bad. If you plan to stay longer than a few nights, negotiate a weekly or monthly rate. Most of them have options available. Some rooms will have a kitchenette and a microwave and fridge that you could use, so you can prep your own food. Worth asking about that when you book your room.

If you are looking for a rental, kijiji is pretty good to get something. It is not hard to find a rental in halifax btw.

Lyme disease is a potential issue for sure. Ticks are a problem for sure, though I do a fair bit of hiking and I just spray some bug spray on my shoes and pant legs. Haven't had any issues. Also to be sure, it takes about 24 hours after being bitten before you are infected. So if you go out where you are potentially exposed, just do a full body inspect after and remove any ticks as soon as possible.

Highly unlikely you will get it walking on a pavement or in your garden (unless not maintained)

Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I have so many queries. I hope you would help me.
Are you still in Halifax ?
In Country Inn, have you stayed there ever ? What is the average price per night?
Getting job is hard or can we get good one after doing some efforts ?
Is there any need of reference while getting room on rent and trying for job ?
What is the average rent of one room ? And which areas are good for living in Halifax ?
Is there any need to check your neighborhood while renting room ? Some people are saying, it matters.
Sorry, my questions are so many. I will be thankful to you if you could answer these.
Regards

I still live in Halifax. Love the city. (miss the big city, but love Halifax also)

Daily room rates in Halifax vary between 100 and 150/night (hotels). Motels 65 - 90. It is easier to negotiate monthlies with motels. Airbnb will probably prove a better option. Most hotels here are pretty decent. Happy to stay in any of them myself. Best Western is also nice and usually not too expensive.

Job question is hard to answer. Depends who you are, what industry you are in and what level you are looking to enter the job market. There are jobs in Halifax. Call center type work easily available and pay not bad. The saying here is "there is work if you want it." Might not be the work you like or want, but you do not have to starve. If you are particular about your job, unless you are lucky, jobs are hard in Halifax generally.

Not sure about the rent question, never rented in canada. References are useful if you can get (even foreign). But I find people are reasonable, if you explain your situation most will understand.

There are some neighbourhoods that are less desireable to live in than others, but most of halifax is pretty decent. Depends on your situation. You keep on saying renting a room. That is probably a little harder (possible but harder). You can probably get a pretty decent apartment for $700 / month upwards. Check the neighbourhood? what does that mean? Like i said, most neighbourhoods are decent enough.

good luck

Here is a list of all the schools in Halifax

http://www.hrsb.ca/about-our-schools/school-finder/all-schools

I volunteer for Junior Achievement Nova Scotia and have a few teacher friends. Very few schools in Halifax have a "reputation" per se. They are are relatively on par. Education you will get throughout is pretty much exactly the same.

The only school I have ever heard bad things about has since been closed down.

All the others are pretty decent.

There are a few private schools as well. Nothing bad to say about them either. Different kids, mostly from very affluent families, so you have to make sure your kid is comfortable in that environment. Other than that..

Little risk in finding the closest school to where you live and sending your kids there.

Thank you for the info. We are planning to move to Halifax from India in a few months. As far as public elementary schools are concerned, which has a more diverse environment? Heard Park West is good? At least in the initial phases it will be good for the kids to not be the only odd ones out. Thanks!

Not sure I am really equipped to properly answer this question. Halifax is fairly diverse as a matter of course. Once you land in Halifax perhaps might be worth to contact the Halifax immigrant help organization. I expect you will be able to get the best answers there.
