Not sure if this is a glitch, but the standard processing times have changed. I just saw that for a student permit applied from outside Canada, the waiting time is now 9 weeks. :D
the processing time now is 12 weeks again, the 9 weeks could have been a glitch :(

12 weeks for SDS or non-SDS?
Also, Is it not contradictory that at their home page it is mentioned that SDS application are generally processed unden 20 calendar days
Welcome to the shitshow, bro!! Forget SDS/Non-SDS or whatever they have mentioned about SDS. 20 days is pre-pandemic time, we would consider ourselves lucky if we get our visas in 12 weeks. There are folks waiting 15+ weeks already on SDS.

Are they sensitive towards the fact that how imp it is for students to get their Study permit before Sept. Many may have to service notice period in their company, many may have to take a call on other admits received. If 20 calendar days doesn't hold good then they should remove that immediately because that is misleading, I frankly applied because I read that its 20 calendar days. Shouldn't they put on hold other visas - tourist. Shouldn't they be just processing Student visa? Are they working on weekends and public holidays?

The situation is terrible but you can't really blame anyone. No country gets this many applications for study visas, not even US if you look at 2022 numbers and they are 10 times the population of Canada. The number of applicants has gone way up almost doubled from 2019 and no one forgets a government can scale up its operations in such a manner. You cannot prioritize students because there are people needing their work permits, residency, etc plus Canada will and should prioritize their needs, they can do with some delays in permits. So what if they lose out on a few, there are literally thousands where they came from. Major universities in Canada are lobbying the government to speed up the processing because they subsidize the local students through foreign ones, but there are way too many applicants and they need time to verify because let's be honest, quite a number of them don't even know why and where they are going to study.

I thought IRCC was still in sleep mode but the truth is, they're scaling their efforts by quite a bit. They've automated some stuff, got more staff on board, and have the Afghan and Ukraine refugees to cater to...it's a lot. Despite all this, they've begun going down to their service standards in other countries. It's just that the number of applicants from India overshadows the number from other countries...so it's not easy to process such a vast number in crunch time.

However, a lot of people in India are getting their decisions in 12 or so weeks; so let's stay hopeful.

I agree, shouldn't then they should be changing the 20 calendar days information on their website. It is misleading and can put anyone in soup. I literally read that and believed it to be true as it's on their official website before taking call for Canada Student visa.

I always wondered why SDS, if the regular steam gives a "higher chance of approval."

Well, not in all cases, but many! Is the processing time more important than the result?

I thought SDS had a higher chance of approval since you are showing the fund availability upfront in terms of tuition and GIC. Whereas for non-SDS it all depends on the type of financial documents you can produce and if IRCC deems them valid.

That is not necessary mean a higher chance.

plus read this post:

https://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/threads/what-financial-documents-to-show-for-sds-when-ive-paid-1st-year-gic-tuition-fees-myself-but-am-also-supported-by-my-father.771721/post-10138724

plus you must see what does historical data shows when it comes to profiles like yours. For instance people from your nationality, same current level of study, same proposed study level, etc.

Agree with the post. It all comes down to the visa officer's discretion then..
Although in most cases (atleast for what I've experienced for Master's applicants) tuition + GIC is sufficient and their approval rates have been better compared to non-SDS.
