Hi All

Looking for some help really on my possibilities for entry to Canada.

I am a qualified Civil Engineer.

I have a degree form Glasgow University with lots of other Qualifications.

I have done my IELTS and got 8.5

I have a family of 4, the funds in place and the will from the family to move to Canada.

Mid 30's and looking for advice on whether you think I would be eligible for Express Entry.

Go through the steps (answer all questions) and post the total score and we'll take it from there.

From what you're saying though, I think you should be fine.

No - unfortunately that's not good. You need to look for ways to increase your score (e.g. take the language test again, have your spouse take the language test, have your spouse's education assessed, etc.).

Yes - it's irrelevant. Your points are too low so you need to do whatever you can to increase them if you want a realistic chance of being selected. Have her education assessed as well for additional points (assuming she completed post secondary education).

Yes my wife also has a degree, and a post grad. she is a teacher and specialises in special needs education.

We will most certainly take your advice, and book her on the IELTS.

please be aware even if you have 8.5 ielts you may be getting less point if for example your score in listening is below 8.. I had a similar issue had to reapply ielts the second the overall band was 7.5 but got 8.5 in listening which jacked up my score quite a bit..

Also, what level is your degree? What level is your wife's?

yeah , i have a similar feeling. Your IELTS score is pretty good, and I believe civil engineers are NOC-A , so you really should be getting a lot more than that.

With your wife's post-grad and most likely, teaching experience, she could take the tests and be the lead applicant. She may have an overall higher score.

Did a quick calculation of the points @derekwj37 should get and I'm getting around 417 to 435 points depending on whether spouse language and education is assessed. This is my biggest issue with the Express Entry ranking system. It places far too much emphasis on age. The drop off in points from a 29 yo to a 35 yo (mid-30s as @derekwj37 mentioned) is just far too high.

That's 40 points separating 6 years in age. When you consider that retirement age in Canada is ~65, that's another 30 or so years of contribution to the labour market.
