Hi Guys,

I am new to the forum.. my significant other is currently living in Scotland. Since I am a Canadian citizen and the opportunities are better in Canada then in Scotland we are trying to figure out how he can immigrate to Canada. He has a college HND diploma, a BSC and an MSC all in forestry (with specialization in fields such as soil science, aquaculture, agriculture etc). Ideally we would like to settle in Ontario as that is where myself and my family live. I am really unsure about the best way to go about doing this as the Canadian Immigration website is so confusing- I am basically at a loss! I would like to avoid sponsorship or marriage just to get him over. He would also like to try to do it on his own. The whole process is just so confusing! If anyone could give me ay advice I would be very grateful!

1. There is no category for significant other. If you are married or have lived together in a Common/law relationship for 1 year, as a Canadian citizen residing abroad, you can sponsor him. As you know.
2. The forms and instructions are here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse.asp
3. Unless he has at least one year's experience in one of the 50 occupations or an approved Job offer, http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/apply-who-instructions.asp#jobs he won't qualify.
4. If he is under 31 years old, he could apply for a 1 year IEC visa (2nd IEC allowed for UK citizens) allowing him to work at any job in Canada for 1 year. http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/united_kingdom-royaume_uni/experience_canada_experience/ It will probably re-open in Nov/Dec 2014. You have to be quick, as the work permits go within hours.
