Hi,
My son aged 10 yrs is attending a Public School in Toronto. He is in Grade 5 . Till Grade 4 he was studying in India. He feels the schools here are just based on lots of Physical activities and very much different. I cannot find nor understand how to track his studies since he comes home with just few papers cliped to a file.
Can someone throw some light on how to tackle this ?

Regards,
Vidya

Hello :).

Have you considered calling the school office and asking them for a meeting with his teacher and/or someone else who can explain the curriculum (eg. counselor, vice-principal). You can ask them about what the day looks like and what type of homework he should be getting. You can also get a sense of his performance and establish a communication system to stay in touch with the teacher throughout the school year. They can also share the goals for the year and how they fit in with other school years leading up to high school.

The school office can also let you know if there is a curriculum night, school open house, or parent teacher meetings coming up. If you have time, volunteering for the parent council could help put you in touch with other parents to get their perspectives too or volunteering at the school can give you first-hand insight into his day.

Good luck!

Hi, vidya,
In Canada education system and curriculum are different then India. They don't want to give mental stress with bunch of homework. As OhCanadiana has mentioned, same thing I will suggest that you can meet his teacher and ask her/him. Before end of the semester there will be general meeting, one on one parent teacher meeting to discuss the study progress and reports. You can ask the school office to book for you an early meeting or get the extension number to call your child's teacher. You can also visit the school website, principal blog, and /or TDSB website, check curriculum and academic activities.

Here in Canada schools , study is so relax....it is very different if you compare with Singapore schools , a lot of homework including holiday ,so much stressful and competition.

Thanx OhCanadiana & Hmisabpk for ur inputs.
GOD BLESS U & CANADA.
