Rules on applying for PR

Dear whom is reading this,

Im from London, UK. Im currently in Canada and came in as a visitor, As a British Citizen I do not need a visa, I can travel back and forth for up-to 6 months. Now, I have graduated in a B.Sc. In Civil Engineering. I would like to move to Canada and figured my best way to come would be to study here as finding a job seems merely impossible.

1.Am I right in assuming that if i take a 1 year course inside canada then after the 1 year course is complete, I may be able to apply for permanent residency??

2.And would it be possible to obtain a study permit from within Canada?

Do you think canada is better than UK for civil engineers? Here most of the engineers are jobless now due to slump in oil price. Most of the companies are laying of engineers now.

1. No - this is generally not correct. Taking a 1 year course in Canada does not typically entitle you to apply for PR (it can in some provinces if that one year course is a Masters). Canada's immigration programs and the criteria for applying for PR can be found here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/apply.asp

2. No - you cannot obtain a study permit from within Canada. You must apply through the visa office responsible for your home country.

No i dont think the jobs for Civil Engineers in Canada are better but UK its impossible to find a job...

Will it not be useful if i take a Certificate Program for a year? Because I already have my undergraduate?

You can take a certificate program if you want to. However taking a certificate program alone won't qualify you to apply for PR.

Thanks scylla, But what kind of programmes besides a master would allow me too apply for PR eventually, As masters is way too expensive for international Students.

You can try master degree research based, then you may get stipend.

Hey ttrajan thanks for the reply,

What do you mean by research based, I meant like if there are any programmes which would lets say be cheaper and not like a masters as there is no financial aid for International student. And Also i have spoken to few universities and they either want a one off payment of in 2 instalments.

Would i be able to work along side my study permit? As i have lots of family living in canada who also own food businesses, nothing too professional and they would be able to help me earn money alongside my studies.

Check Toronto, British Columbia, Alberta and Calgary university websites. There are research based master degree available.
