I was curious, I landed a little more than three weeks ago and I imported my car when I landed. I paid my fees on the RIV website the next day. I was curious as to how long after this does it take to get the paperwork in the mail? Isn't that what happens now? I get something in the mail that tells me what I need to do? I was wondering because it also says on the paperwork they gave me at the border that I need to get it inspected within 45 days. Do I need the paperwork from RIV for that?

They should have sent you something approx. 10 days after you paid the RIV fee (see excerpt from RIV website below). It also says you should be able to "Track Your Case" and print your vehicle’s RIV inspection form online. Have you tried that?

My hubz is importing his car in 4 weeks, so I'm deep into this stuff right now!

From the RIV website:

How long does the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) registration, inspection and certification process take?

Importers have 45 days from the date of import for their vehicle to pass the RIV inspection process. Once the RIV Import Form – Form 1 has been completed at the border, recall clearance documentation has been provided to RIV and full payment has been received, importers normally receive the RIV inspection form within 10 days by mail. If a valid e-mail address is provided, the RIV inspection form can be sent by e-mail the same day that it is processed rather than mailed.

Use Track Your Case to see if payment or vehicle documentation has been received and processed. You can also print your vehicle’s RIV inspection form once the appropriate conditions have been met.

Once a vehicle passes inspection, a Canadian Statement of Compliance (SOC) label will be sent by regular mail to the importer of record.

Hubby and I are landing in about 3 weeks. we will be importing 2 vehicles plus a trailer that our stuff will be.
What do we have to do prior to leaving the US? Just pay the fees? I know we have to bring with us a statement showing that there are no recalls and something about faxing paperwork 72 hrs prior to crossing the border.
Anything else I need to be aware of? I'm having trouble finding stuff on the trailer. Everything I have found was in regards to like camper type trailers. Our trailer is just for stuff...you cant camp in it. Its an enclosed car hauler that our 2nd vehicle will be in as well as some personal effects.

It's really confusing, actually. When I crossed I flagpoled and the American side told me I needed to fax them the title to my car 72 hours in advance. Well I didn't have my title since my car was being financed I just had a letter from my bank saying they give me permission to import it to Canada. So I wasn't quite ready so I planned on landing and then importing my car on a later date, which I was assured would be possible. When I TRIED to actually do this, however, the Canadian border would not have that, but they imported my car in a hot second, I just showed them the letter (from my bank) and they had me call my bank and fax a copy of the title. I also thought I needed the recall clearance but when I tried to show it to them, they shooshed it away and said they didn't need it. So I imported my car without ever actually faxing anything to the American border control.

lol, it's so confusing!!!
