I've a PR card that is expiring in October 2012. Due to family commitments back home, I could not move permanently to Canada as planned. As of today, I have managed to accumulate about 6 months residency for the 5 year period of the PR validity. Therefore I will not meet the 730 days residency requirement.

I am living outside Canada now and would like to return to renew my PR status. Is it possible for me to return and stay for the remaining 1.5 years so that I can renew my status?

Suppose I do that and return before October to continue accumulating my residency in Canada. Am I considered an illegal immigrant in the country while I let my PR card expire and not apply for renewal immediately?

Are there any other options for me to renew my PR as I really do not want to lose this status. Please help.

If you get into Canada without being reported for not meeting the requirements, you can stay for a full 2 years and then apply to renew your PR card. You are not an illegal immigrant if you are a PR in Canada with an expired card. You are still a PR, just don't have a card which you don't need anyway if you are in Canada. You just need a SIN number to work.
