We have refugee status with my family and have received our Blue Refugee Travel Document (RTD), which is valid for two years, until 2026. We have not yet received our permanent residence (PR) as this is still in process.

My question is, if we travel outside of Canada for tourism with our RTD (not to our country of origin), will we need a Permanent Resident (PR) status/card to return to Canada? Or will returning with the RTD suffice?

RTD is fine. Please verify whether you are able to visit the country with an RTD and if so whether you need a visa. If visiting a neighbouring country to your home country I would keep proof of your travels and would even go as far as taking a picture daily in that location because IRCC often gets concerned that people are entering their home countries unofficially especially in some areas of the world where borders are more porous.

Thanks for your response. Is there any link on the IRCC website that states this?

You’ll have to Google it but why would IRCC issue RTDs to non-PRs if you couldn’t use them?

For first time it's good to have your work permit and NOD with your self in the border of entry some of the officer will check it, but normally they could see all your history on his computer, depending on officer and your nationality

If you have an RTD you would have to have an NOD but you could always travel with a copy accessible on your phone.
