I have been in Canada for over 8 years as a visitor. I have a family in Canada all have canadian citizenship except me. I am going back to my home country for a visit for a few months. I am concerned that I would be stopped at custom when I return to Canada. Should I have a return ticket and also should I tell them I basically live in canada with my family but I don't work or study. I just want to prepare for some questions they would ask.

It is a small miracle that you have been able to extend you visitor status for so long. Your husband must not have been employed and on welfare when you sent in your first extension request so surprised the initial extensions were approved. Do you live in one of the few provinces that would grant you health care coverage? Do you have Canadian children? Did you apply for H&C? At a certain point you are going to be denied an extension or be stopped at a border because you are a visitor trying to live in Canada which is not allowed. Nobody can predict when.

Just for clarification are you from a visa exempt country given not sure that in using the extend stay as a visitor process whether that can be used as a travel document, maybe others here have better knowledge .Back in 2017 you asked same question about leaving and coming back did you actually do that ?

You cannot "basically live in Canada with [your] family" on a visitor status.

Have you actually renewed your status for 8 years, or did you just enter once and not leave?

If you tell CBSA that you "basically live in Canada" you will be stopped at the border.

Thank you canuck78 for your reply. Unfotunately I don't have health care coverage so far I haven't needed health care luckly. My children have dual citizenship. I am planning to apply H&C after I come back from this trip.
I am going back with one of my children.
So definitely I should have a return ticket, and should expect that they will stop me.

Thank you Bs65 for your reply. I am from a vise exempt country. and I did think to go back to visit my own country but never happened yet.
I would like to come back to Canada but I have been afraid that I wouldn't be able to.

Thank you k.h.p. for your reply. I have been renewing my visitor record yearly and I never had any problems so far.
Ok, so I should tell them I am going to visit my family for 6 months then. hopefully they let me in.
