Retrieving Expired Passport with Valid Visa

Hi there,

I'm hoping to get some information on retrieving my expired passport. It recently expired, but I still have a valid visa in it.

Is there a web form available for requesting the return of my expired passport? or how can I ask for it?

Are you a PR?

To the best of my knowledge you have to wait until you are a PR before you can ask for the return of your passport. It's not possible at this time.

No. you can not. until you become a PR. The "however" below, highlighted in red does not apply to In Canada protected Status applying for PR, since renewing passport is one of the reason for cessation..

If you have a PR application being processed
Your seized passport or other travel document will be returned to you after you become a permanent resident.

However, if it expires, we’ll return it early so that you can renew it. Then we can finalize your application.

i was always told you won't get it back or be able to request for it to be returned to you until after you became PR. but even when you become pr it is recommended not to do any of these because they may cause risks of re-availment/cessation because you are still a protected person/refugee just with PR status.
  • Travels to their home country (even for a short visit)
  • Travels using the passport of their home country
  • Applies for a new passport from their home country.

i was always told to not use my passport even as a pr and just get a refugee travel document.. i did not need it for my pr application nor my citizenship app or anything tbh so it is still with cbsa. it is still valid so i will ask for it once i get my canadian passport.
