I applied to extend my IEC work visa, as I was given 6 months short due to my passport expiring. I now have a new passport and applied to extend 2 months BEFORE my visa expired, as is allowed under my circumstance according to the IEC website.

I did not hear before my visa expired so was on implied status, awaiting a response.

I just received a reply saying I missed something in my application and need to send it back, updated. However, it is now past my visa expiration date so i am out of status. It says I need to pay $200 to restore my temporary resident status.

Anyone been in the same situation? Do I just wait here and not work until I hear? Or am I supposed to now get a tourist visa or do I not need to because I have applied for restoration? Or any other options/suggestions?

You'll need to wait and not work until you hear a response to the restoration application. Note that restoration applications can take anywhere from a few weeks to four months to process.
