Hi all,

I want to know if the days spent in Canada on Visitor's Record can be counted in Residency calculation.
Here is my situation, I arrived in Canada in Mar-2009 on Work Permit. My wife accompanied me but she was on Visitor's Record.
As I was on WP before landing in Canada as PR, I was able to add my WP days in my citizenship residency calculation.
My wife was on visitor's record for a year and got the WP only in Mar-2010.
Can somebody let me know if she can include days spent in Canada on visitors record or her counting starts only from the time she started her residing on WP.
Please advise.

Thanks!

I think you can count those days as half a day. Here is the answer from the CIC site:
What is the residence requirement?

To be eligible for Canadian citizenship, you must have lived in Canada for at least three years (1,095 days) out of the four years (1,460 days) preceding your application. Please note that you cannot meet the residence requirements for citizenship without a minimum of two (2) years as a permanent resident.

When calculating your time in Canada:
•only the four (4) years preceding the date of your application are taken into account;
•each day you lived in Canada before you became a permanent resident counts as half a day;
•each day you lived in Canada after you became a permanent resident counts as one day;

Thanks Goldline!

So it is same for WP and VR.
WP days are also counted as half a day in calculation and so would the VR days be.
That helps!!

In the answer to question 5 it says :time spent outside of Canada (other than for short vacations) will not be counted towards the calculation of the 1095 days required to qualify for Canadian Citizenship.

Does that mean if I go for 1-2 weeks vacation or family visit will those days counted? Or I they will be counted as physical absence?

Any absence irrespective of number of days will be considered as absence and days not included in the 1095 (be it a day), - Unless it is a day trip which means you leave Canada and get back before mid night of the same day....

Hi sweetakash,
If you have not applied yet then no need to worry about the time in 2009. You can count only 4 years from the day you sign your application. So your wife would have got her wp by then.
