Good suggestion from rupeshhari... Look at short term accommodation so you can have a sense of Canadian job market and other relevant details. Select the area where you want to live before you go for long term commitment or buying a property.

Make sure you bring warm cloths :) Good luck!

Yep there can be fraud. The best thing might be to go and stay in a famous hotel, it doesnt have to be an expensive one. Maybe something like holdiay inn for one or two nights, then look at other cheaper hotels/motels to see if they are safe, non-scam etc and then during that time, go look at rental property (even from craigslist).

I don't know if Canada has "motel 8" kind of hotels. They are not particularly nice but I was told that they are clean.

There's "studio6" in Mississauga. We were thinking of living close to Toronto Downtown initially. What do you think about this idea? Can you please let me know something about hostels in Canada? Like Hihostel, Canadiana Backpacker's etc.? Are they clean? As per their website they are located right in Toronto downtown and have public transport at the door step. How popular these hostels are? What are the pros and cons in case we stay there initially (say for 5 to 7 days max).

I stayed in a hostel once in NYC. That wasn't very clean. Its public bathroom, etc. You should check if they have single room with attached bathroom and look at what reviews people say on their website (which may be biased too).
Pro - its cheap, downtown, public transport
Cons - dirty and if you stay in a dorm, make sure you get a locker to lock stuff up.

Hi Calgirl,

As your signature showing that you are from kolkata, can you please let me know from which place you did your medicals here. I can see there are four places in Kolkata where we can go for medicals.

We have done it from Dr. Jatrik Biswas at Ballygange. It's behind Overseas Bank in Palm Avenue. He is good.

They have separate rooms for families. Not interested to stay in dorms. They don't even have private bathrooms. We are now least interested to stay there. Thank you.

Check the metro/subway schedule from outside Toronto into downtown, perhaps you can stay outside which might be cheaper. I don't know Toronto at all, but I presume it has a subway of sorts.
