I am told that one has to show proof at the boarder that they have a relative in Canada before they let you apply for refugee asylum. Is this true or false? I need information as soon as possible please.

Which border? If you mean the USA/Canada land border, you will probably be refused if you don't have relatives in Canada, under the Safe Third Country agreement. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/laws-policy/menu-safethird.asp

Yes. Otherwise, you must claim in the first country that you are in. In your case, you must apply in the USA if you don't have a Canadian relative.
