We applied for spousal sponsorship in november. And just today we got an email requesting his passport at the embassy. Does that mean the application has been approved and he got the permanent residence visa

Yes. But you have to submit the passport first before they can stamp the visa on his PP. The COPR will be sent to your husband together with his PP. Congratulations.

What is exactly the COPR? Is there a link or sthg... And where do they set the time frame that we have to land before that time?

COPR: When an immigrant is approved for permanent residence in Canada, they receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence document. An immigration officer at the port of entry or a CIC office signs and dates this document when permanent residence is finally granted. This document is used by permanent residents to show to provincial and territorial organizations in order to access services. There is an immigration category printed on this document.
