Landed in ontario and after eye & knowledge test they gave me a G1 and scheduled for G test right away. I specifically asked them about rentals they replied anything is fine even US cars are as long as the registration is valid and the car is in working condition.

My license was given back to me and they took a photo copy but they kept the authentication letter mentioning my experience.

Apparently how Ontario handles it makes much more sense.

Did you get G license by renting a car? I'm living here for 8 months already, so I'm not sure if they will accept that on the drive test! In this meanwhile I had rented cars with no issues on my country driver license!
I'm planning to do next month, so I would like to see if someone in Ontario had the same experience!
I was actually thinking on borrowing a car, but since there is no insurance on my name, it would not be accepted!

Hello guys!

Can anyone please advise on the following:

I recently got the G1 license in Ottawa and because I have a valid license from a country with no exchange agreement and more than 24 months of experience I'm able to attempt the G road test.

The question is: Can I rent a car for my G road test given that I have a valid license from another country and even if I have a G1 Ontario License (which means you can't drive without an accompanying G driver)?

Please advise.

Thank you,
Rox.
Dear RBatista,
since you have more that 24 months of driving experience ,was it possible to apply for G2 directly ?

Hi,

I am from Ottawa, and I was exactly in the same situation as the original poster. For me it was cheaper to rent a car for an additional month until I got the G license, than to pay G1 based car insurance for my own car. I needed to wait about a month here in Ottawa to get a G test appointment. Some colleagues from my office scheduled their G tests in smaller neighbouring towns where you do not wait so long.

You can rent the car with the license from your home contry and you can use in the G drive test without any problems.

I also scheduled two times two hours of driving lessons with the local instructor, to familiarize with the local pecularities.

Hey there,
Thanks for your post. I am wondering if you finally used a rental car for G road test without any problems. Did you do it successfully? Thanks!

Yes, I used a rental car for my G road test, no questions about the car were asked by the examiner, and everything went smoothly.

As I wrote above it was very important to scedule four hours of driving with the local instructor which showed me little driving tricks around the testing centre (parking, median).

Thanks! This is great and congrats for your success. I will have my road test on March 16th. I hope, I can get it on my first try like you.

Have you booked your G road test yet, or tried to do so online? I did the same thing and am trying to book using the temporary licence number but can't get through. I don't know if I have to wait before I get the actual card and use the number there, or if I'm doing something wrong in the first place.

I was told at the centre I could already take the full G road test since I also provided the letter.

Are you putting in the expiry date on the temporary certificate? You need to put in the expiry date of your licence, which is five years from the issue date. It doesnt show on the certificate. Just use the same day and month of the issue date and use 2021 as the year.

Thank you. You saved me so much time and effort.
