I did my landing on rental car. All I told was I will be back in US after a day. No one bothered. No one asks for driving license. If you are stopped by a law enforcement official you can say you are US resident visiting temporarily. You US license is proof of that.

Then after few months I came again on my own US car to start Bank account, get SIN and find an apartment to move after few months. I was allowed to enter without PR card. I was not asked to pay any import duty. I told the office I will be back in US after two days.

Then when I moved permanently I was asked to get the import fees not duty. As while landing you can import the car without duty had you owned it for a period. Then I took about 3 months to complete the Canadian Plates and License. (As when I landed there was a strike in ON on licensing test centers and they were liberal about the period. without Canadian license no Canadian Auto Insurance without Canadian Auto Insurance no Canadian plates)

A Canadian resident living or residing in Canada should not be driving a own car with US registration or should not be using US license more that certain days. But you are allowed to enter with US car and allowed to use US license. But as Leon said some officers don't understand permanent resident status and real residence. Even you have a permanent resident status unless you are real residence you will not get tax benefit, Medical insurance etc.

You shouldn't have any problem landing with a U.S. rental car. Just make clear that it is a rental car and you will be returning to the U.S. with it shortly. Make sure you have a copy of the rental agreement just in case. Also, make sure you have permission from the rental agency to take the car into Canada. If I remember correctly, Enterprise does not allow their cars to cross the border either direction.

I suppose one can call a few rental companies in Buffalo and ask them... They would certainly have the answer. I believe the insurance rates/costs are more in Canada, so the rental company might ask you to increase that.

Really thinking of reviving this topic. Because the topic is something of interest. Simply coz I would appreciate some kinda help with renting car in Toronto. I'm gonna be in Toronto for two weeks in June and wanna know where I can get a good car hire. Some friends are advising I find someone I know in Toronto and hire from them instead of using a company. REally wanna know which way is better. Will a comparison company such as carrentalsmarket offer a good solution?

Don't drag your friends into trouble especially if you are not a safe driver.

Hi Guys, I am in need of Help..

We completed landing formalities on June 23rd 2015 in Canada and came back to US, and We are still waiting for pr card.

now we are in a situation to move to Canada for good.

1) Is COPR and Passports enough to travel via Rental Car way border to Canada from Michigan ?

2) Does Rental Car need to have US plates or Canadian Plates?

3) if Canadian Rental Plates are required? where will i get these kind of rental car in Michigan?
