renewing Alberta Health Card

can I renew my alberta health card even if my work permit expired but still have a Visa here in Canada?

Sorry you cannot. Did they not send you a letter stating that upon expiry of your work permit , you cease to have coverage?

No they did'nt send me any letters.

When did it expire? Usually they send a letter couple months before it expires. If your work permit has expired you cannot renew your health care card

You can get a one time only extension of 3 months (you just call them to do this, you can't do this at a registry), then if you get a renewed work permit in those 3 months you take that permit into a registry and get your insurance extended to match your new expiry.

My health card actually expired since last sept.23,2014...i will try to call the AB HEALTH office to ask about the 3mos.

There is no point to call them. 3 months extension is only applicable if your healthcard is about to expired and you have wp on process and beside your healthcard is already expired last sept 2014. If they will give you extension for it. Its gonna be december 2014.

When I did mine I did not have to show evidence of another permit in process. I went into a registry office with evidence and they said they couldn't help me and I had to call to get it done. I called and they did it on the spot without any questions about any permits in progress.

You're correct that it will only extend 3 months from when your previous permit expired, not from when you call.
