Renew SIN outside of Canada

My WP has expired and I'm wait for the new WP, based on the processing time, I don't think I can get the new one before Jun 15.

The problem for me is that I'm going back to my home country at the end of this month and I need to use the new WP to extend my SIN for Maternity and Parental EI application. I called Service Canada, a lady told me that I should be able to renew SIN by mail and then apply for EI online, but she sounds pretty uncertain.

I won't be able to come back here until next year so I really hope to make sure that I can renew SIN and apply for EI outside Canada, or I might lose the benefit... Has anyone renewed SIN abroad before? I'd really appreciate it if you can share your experiences or opinions.

Ah - got it. To the best of my knowledge you have to go to the office in person. I think there's a mail in option for people who live a certain distance away from a Service Canada office - but don't know who qualifies for that.

That's also what the lady at Service Canada told me, but she was not quite sure either...Thanks anyway for your reply

Edit: you need to call the number in the link to determine if you are eligible. They also need original documents.
