My application for citizenship was received by IRCC in April 2021, given long wait times should I look to renew my Permanent Residency before it runs out in January 2022? Will I run into issues if my residency runs out before my citizenship application goes through?

No. The expiry of your PR card doesn't affect your citizenship application OR your PR status in Canada. PR card validity is very different from the PR status. If your PR card expires, it doesn't mean your "residency will run out".

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/new-immigrants/pr-card/understand-pr-status.html

Losing your permanent resident status
You don’t lose your permanent resident status when your PR card expires. You can only lose your status if you go through an official process.
You can lose your permanent resident status if:
  • an adjudicator determines you are no longer a permanent resident after an inquiry or PRTD appeal;
  • you voluntarily renounce your permanent resident status;
  • a removal order is made against you and comes into force; or
  • you become a Canadian citizen.
Even if you don't meet the residency obligation, you are still a PR until an official decision is made on your status.
Having said that, you don't necessarily have to renew the card if you don't plan to travel. But, you don't know when an emergency will come knocking, if you have to travel outside Canada for any reason, you'll need a PR card to get back to Canada. So, my opinion is, well, go ahead and renew the card to be on the safer side (just in case you have an emergency and you want to travel outside Canada).

Do you plan any travel in the next few months or do you want to be ready for any emergency situations that require you to travel? If your answer is no to both, then you don't have to renew your PR card or passport.

Processing time for Canadian passport is currently 20 business days:
https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-passports/processing-times.html

But there are special measures for legitimate emergency situations (travel has to be pre-booked and reason for travel must be a matter of life and death)--we've seen it happen for the ceremony, certificate, and passport processing.

I am okay to not travel till next 6 month.

thank you for your reply.

Will just wait and hope to get oath ceremony email soon.
seems like Guelph area CIC office is taking little long time.

20 days for Canadian passport sounds great, i was getting confused with citizenship certificate ( which is 15 month) required document to get passport.

regards,
