Hi Folks,
Hi everyone,

I’m currently on a study permit in Canada, and I’m working as a private contractor for a US-based employer. I am neither a US nor Canadian citizen. According to the IRCC website, it is allowed to work for an employer online as long as they are not based in Canada. My employer is registered in the US, pays me through PayPal in USD, and I’m responsible for filing my own taxes. However, they have also taken my SIN (Social Insurance Number) from Canada, and I want to be absolutely certain that I am complying with the regulations.

Can anyone provide more clarity on how I can verify that my employer qualifies as a US-based company for the purposes of my study permit? Are there any specific steps I should take to ensure that everything is in compliance with the rules?

Thanks for any insights you can offer!

Hi I am actually a private tutor, and some of my students/clients are canadians
So that is tricky because then you fall under study permit rules of 24 hours per week. So as long as not working more than 24 hours per week then you are fine.

thanks you so much for clearing that up! I am planning on visiting my home country in scheduled break, am i allowed to do work from home from my home country?

Thanks a lot for replying I appreciate it! I mean as now I am an canadian resident, and on my scheduled break I can work full time here in canada, but since my job is WFH can I do it in India and pay my taxes in canada? would it have any implications in my PGWP?

If you are not in Canada, then working has nothing to do with Canada or having a work permit. You can do what you want. You report your world income.

I had one more question I have to travel to India due to some family emergency. In my semester there are 3 courses, 2 out of 3 would be completed by 15 march, and I have taken an authorised leave from my institution from 15 march to 25 april, I understand that during that i can not work. Would this have any implication on my PGWP? As i heard you need atleast 3 courses to maintain a full time student status in eyes of IRCC. According to my registrar i will get my 3 years PGWP as i am in masters program
