regarding the passport renewal and work permit in canada?

I completed my 2 yrs full time study in electromechanical engineering technician at sheridan college. My study permit is valid upto march 2017 and my passport is expiring in may 2018

so if I apply for work permit, I will get work permit of 1 yr only instead of 3 yrs because my passport is expiring ?

Is it like that my passport cant be renewed before 1 yr of expiry

So what should I do?

i contacted BLS Brampton they are telling me , your passport cant be renewed before 1 yr

so i contacted toronto office and they told me you need to write purpose to toronto officer and they approve it after that i can do procedure of renewing


thats how it works i dont know


so please suggest me

Hi Deep,

As you can't renew your passport before 1 year of expiry, you've to apply for your open work permit first which you will get until May 2018 then after May 2017 you can apply for renewal of your passport. Once you get your new passport then you can apply for renewal of your work permit within 3 months of expiry of your Work permit.

I was able to renew my passport 4 years before expiry but mine was processed under a change in personal particulars (appearance and signature).

Your case is same as me but if you can renew your passport any time if you have any correction or update in personal particulare otherwise can't before 1 year of expiry.

This is actually the proper way to go.
Yes, it requires you to do more paperwork but there is no way around it.
