My recent exp in Canada

I know many of us here have shared their experience after reaching canada, so here comes another experience..
I have applied under FSW '0213' and my appl was recieved by Buffalo July 2009 since then no update, but in between my company has transfered me to Toronto and I reached here on work permit on 3rd april..

Here is some exp and suggestions ( some of this will be valid for any new immigirant)

I landed via Vancouver BC and then reached Toronto.

> Try to carry cash, any bankers cheq or travels chq if you put in your newly open account in canada, will go on hold for
5 days...

> First thing you do is to apply for your SIN, so that you can open account and look for apartments. You will get SIN# same day

> Do not open account with ICICI bank, they ask for two ID proof and one of them has to be from Canada ( how can a new person
in canada give canada based ID, SIN card does not work as ID proof)

> TD Canada Trust bank open account easily based on your passport and work permit.

> Car rental in canada is very costly ( My company booked car for one week and it costs $500+ ), if you are coming without
job ( I mean planning to begin your search after landing, then try to stay at a place where public transit is available)

> Be prepared to give 2 months rent in advance when you rent a apartment and if you are taking in the middle of month
then you may end up paying for first month(pro-rated) + nextmonths + lastmonth in one short ( I had to do and end up blocking good amount of money)

> Since we don't have account in Canada, the rental office ask for certified chq and/ or money order. You can't get certified chq from bank
until your new account with them is not 48 hrs old and if you have put chq as I mentioned above you have to wait
for 5 working days, before the hold on your money goes off. Post office does issue money order but the limit of amount is $999.99 and they charge betn $5.50 to $8.00

> Cell phone service and Internet/Cable services are all on contract based.Rogers and Bell these companies provide this service but they are costly,
try TekSavvy for Home phone and Internet it comes with no contract

> Be prepared to give deposit to cell phone providers since any new comer won't have credit history.

> If you are coming from India, then you will be in shock to see the level of education / curriculum for Elementary schools.

For those who are coming from USA

Canada is no way near USA, I have lived in USA for 4 yrs and now I am in Canada. This is my personal view only
Canada still lacks in good infra, systems, processess and education.MOst of the apartments are @ 30-45 years old and not maintained the way it is in USA
except few in downtown which will be very costly.

Compare to elementary school curriculum in USA, here in canada it sucks atleast in public school ( i can not afford private school )

This place is costly then USA, you will see the difference in day to day spending ( as compared to USA)
Sears and Walmart stores are costly here
Public Transport (Bus, Subway,Train) fares are costly ( compared to bus and train fare in NJ/NY/Boston/Chicago)

In 2002, UN rated canada education system among top 5 in world, I happened to meet the Toronto District School Board staff
as I went for my son admission, they told me that those days are over. The education system (elementary) in Canada is under crisis due to less funds and more inflow of students from across the world.

Canada has attracted very high no# of immigirants during last 5 years+

Private schools are way above our reach

First I will clarify that I am only comparing the education level betn India,USA and Canada. Since I don't have any idea on other countries education system.

When I say curriculm its the course content and If I compare then here in canada its just 30% of what I have seen for my kid in India and USA

What my son did two years back , the school here doing during this year
there are many other examples...

Again its my view only..

Hi SRV
My FSW application is still "In Process" and my present employer is planning to relocate me to Canada for a project. It seems that yours was the same case. Can you please share the challenges in getting the work permit while PR application is pending? Had you told your employer that PR application is in progress? Please share your experience.

I might be taking this thread in a different direction.. what's more important.. syllabus based studies or education leading to personality development..?

My views differ and the reason i will mention within 24 hours. I was also under this illusion for long time cause so many people used to say but found it incorrect.

My application was in 'Recieved By Visa Office' status and your's is 'In Process'.

Yes you should mentiond to your employer about your PR
Per CIC, you can have dual intent ie. PR and work permit

I went to CIC Buffalo for stamping , VO did not ask anything it went very smooth.

Wish you smooth process.

Good luck

When we started our PR process we did hell lot of research.. basically about studies for our kid.. but after arriving here we are not very satisfied with education level..
anyways you may throw some new information for all of us... I respect everyone's thoughts and ideas and information.

Looking at your timeline, I think you are still not in Canada and I am telling you my first hand exp / live exp :)... anyways thats again individual's way of looking at things and situation

Good Luck

Only my opinion. I would go for the latter. In india, we emphasise syllabus and end up with rote learners. In the US (and I would think Canada), there is less emphasis on syllabus and higher on independent thinking. Of course, subject material doesn't have to be ignored but most people from my country tend to ignore personality development and emphasise only subject matter. When I studied in the US, I had friends who were in IIT, failing or struggling with graduate studies at a mediocre university in the US. They were expecting to be told what to do, rather than come up with questions and solutions for research. Well, I am generalising but that is my opinion.

I, for one, am looking forward to less workload for my child who is in the ICSE stream in India. The portions they cover here is just unbelievable

Do continue posting srv, there's nothing like hearing it from the horse's mouth! Your tips on the bank, net connection etc. are very useful. Thanks!

Srv,

Thanks for sharing your experience. Could you please share the Grade which your son attend. Also, how much expensive are the private schools? Thanks
