receiving passport requests while outside of Canada

Hello everybody,
Let me be very quick. I have received passport request regarding to my permanent resident application from the Buffalo office. The problem is that I am not in Canada now. The question is that is it possible to send one of my friends who is in Canada my passport, and ask him to mail my passport to Buffalo (from Canada)? In other words, is my physical presence in Canada necessary for the issuance of the immigration VISA?

I have a follow-on question to Mah's. If CIC requests a passport for final processing of permanent residence, how long does it take to get it back?

First of all, Congratulations!!!

The passport’s delivery has to be personally only if you were asked to deliver it in person, otherwise you can send it by mail, no problem, so it means that somebody else can send it on your behalf, just make sure that this person write your name and your file number on the envelope and his/her Canadian address.
