hi. I was planning to go outside Canada and comeback for my flag poling. I have a US visa but my question is do I need a travel doc or a resident visa for my re-entry in Canada? Got confused either to get a travel doc or re-entry visa I'm not sure. As much as I wanted to go to the border for flag poling I can't since I don't have a car to travel all the way to the border. I live in Alberta.

Thanks.

You definitely need passport and you also need your landing papers you will receive from Ottawa. Also some proof of your current status in Canada - like a valid WP, or expired one and a proof that you applied for BOWP etc. We are also taking employment paystubs and job offer just in case, but I haven't seen anyone being asked for that.

Thank you @terulinkarezinka. I do have a BOWP that will expire on Oct.21,2015. I already have my paystubs & job offer although I'm currently working as part time since I quit with my full time job. Hopefully everything will be fine with God's grace.

I am expecting my passport back on Monday, it was dispatched from Ottawa already today and I just got an email from my consultant - she said: Passports, COPR and proof of implied status is good. But I think we will still take expired WPs and proof of funds and paystubs+job offer. Just in case they ask :)
But she actually told us my husband can now give a notice to his LMIA job - that it's safe now ;D

Package received... prepared documents for tomorrow landing in Coutts... hope this is really the last step... :D :D :D :D :D :D

CoPR and landing today. About an hour or so wait - ours was complicated by goods and paperwork.

Which is better to go in Niagara Falls border, Rainbow bridge, Peace bridge or Queenston Lewiston?

how much did it cost you?

Did my landing in Coutts on August 21st. Weather was rainy and windy the whole day. Went to the US border and the officer asked us where we are heading to and reason and I said that I just want to flagpole for my landing for Canadian permanent residency and he asked us to park at the left side and go inside the building. We waited for about 10 minutes and he gave us our passport and gave me a "refused entry to U.S." paper and escorted us to the Canadian side. He didn't tell me anything.
On the Canadian side, the officer asked where we are heading and reason. I told him I just went to do my flagpole on the U.S. side and asked if we have any firearms/ammunition, alcohol, CAN $10,000 or more in cash and any prohibited items..we said NO. And he said if we just did our U-turn or actually entered US. I said just did our u-turn--this confused me a little bit. And then he told us to park our car and go to the building at the left side. Upon entering the building, there was no one but me & my husband entering and I didn't know which counter to go to, so I just assumed "immigration" counter so I went ahead and greeted the lady officer at the counter. She is straight forward, talking fast and no sign of any emotion, not smiling at all. I told her that I am doing my landing formality for my PR, and handed her my COPR and passport, and asked her if this is the correct counter to go to, she replied, "No, but I can assist you with that as well.". She asked who I was with and told her that he is my husband (he is a Canadian citizen). The officer asked me under what program I had my PR processed, I told her CEC through express entry and she then asked for my work permit. I handed her all my work permits including the old ones (as they are all stapled lol). She, then asked me: 1: if I have been accused, charged etc of any crime here and outside Canada which I said "NO" and 2: If I have children, and I said "YES" but they are not my dependents. She then clarified it back to me by saying, "So you don't have any dependent on this application and you are the principal applicant?" and I said yes. She finally asked us to sit. She then processed my papers, on the computer. It took about half an hour.
She then called out my name, and asked for my husband to be with me as well; she said it is an important process for both of us. And then she asked me the 2 golden questions again re: crimes committed; and if I have any dependents, then told me to write NO to both questions on my COPRs and have my initials on both answers. Then she asked me to read about the PR procedures like getting New SIN etc. She informed me that it will take about 90 days for my PR card to arrive. She also advised not to go out of the country without my PR card, while stapling a copy of my COPR on the stamped page on my passport. And then she said, "that's it. You are out of here". I said thank you. She didn't even reply back. She is just probably not happy assisting me or maybe the weather that day is making her feel blue, lol. BUT anyway, all is well, and she didn't really give me a hard time, just straightforward and phlegmatic approach haha. I am just waiting for my PR card and will do my vacation in December! woot!

Thanks for sharing your stories. I'm going to do the landing in two days. Quick question:

On my CoPR, the date for both "last entry date" and "original entry date" is in February 2014. I indeed crossed the (land) border back then. However this date is neither the last time I entered canada nor the first time, I crossed the Canadian border several times before and after that, both via air and via land border. Could it be that they just pick a random crossing for these two fields? I.e. should I be concerned that they show AN entry date but not THE last or the original one? Were these mentioned when you landed?

They don't ask anything about these dates so I wouldn't worry about them.
I guess maybe it's from your express entry application.
Relax it will all be fine!

Hi there,

Why is flagpoling required in the first place? If one is already in Canada and have recieved the COPR, isn't that it? I understand a PR card is still rquired to travel outside and re-enter Canada and there is a separate process to apply for a PR card. Is flagpoling done to expedite the issuance of PR card? Apologies if it is a dumb question but I thought it is better to ask than to be ignorant.

During the whole application process, no immigration officer has ever seen you in person (unless in the rare case of an interview). For what it's worth, some other person that knows you could have submitted all the documents, fill out the online application etc. Particularly if you are visa exempt, they haven't even seen your original passport yet. Your identity is verified at the landing.

Also, you made several very important statements during your application, most importantly if you committed criminal offences and/or if you are married, have kids etc. You will be asked to certify with a signature before an immigration officer that the statement "I don't have children" (or whatever applicable) is a true statement. This has important legal consequences. Anyone could have selected the "No kids" checkbox in an online form and you could claim it wasn't you if all of a sudden you actually had kids. If this would go to court and there is an immigration officer who can testify that it was you who made that statement, you do not stand a single chance to claim you never made that statement, which is what they want (understandably).

This is why the personal contact is so important and this is why you need to land.

Also please keep in mind that the Confirmation of Permanent Residence you are sent via mail is NOT valid yet. It does NOT yet confirm your permanent residence and you are not a permanent resident until you go to the border and an immigration officer signs the document. THEN the document confirms your permanent residence. Otherwise it's just like a marriage licence without signatures. It's worth nothing.
