Received Confirmation of permanent residence (CoPR)

Hi all,

Today I have received CoPR from Vienna visa office and the the confirmation is valid until 3rd of august 2017.

However me and my wife were planning to come to Canada (toronto) in summer of 2018 (waiting for her to finish university in Quebec).

Is there a way to postpone this validity date? The CoPR was supposed to take 15 months and it got issued to me in around 6 months, so I was surprised.
Also there is condition 51 which says I have to live with her for 2 years, which would not work right now.

Can anyone help please? I am desperate

no, you can not postpone the validity of the COPR. if you don't land by the expiry date, then your approval will be cancelled and you will need to start from scratch.

it's a choice you need to make. either don't land as a PR and reapply when you're ready to move or land now and risk not meeting the condition 51. There is talk the condition is being removed, however the condition is still valid and there is no knowing whether risking it will work out in the end. that is a risk only you can decide to take.

and is there no way of sending the CoPR back to immigration office to reissue the CoPR one year later? The process was supposed to take 15 months and thats what I was planning for. This was pretty misleading.

again, no you can't just request IRCC complies with your needs or convenience. Well, technically you are free to make the request, but it is highly doubtful IRCC will change it without there being a real issue - not being ready to move is not their concern. More than likely if you ask for an extension because you're not ready to move, they will tell you to wait and reapply when ready. your choices are quite clear: don't land or land and risk not complying with condition 51.

Unfortunately, the information that lead you to believe it takes 15 months for a vienna application was misinterpreted, not misleading. The old times posted on the website were NOT averages. it suggested that 80% applications were processed WITHIN That timeframe, with a majority of applications being approved quicker.

here's my take:

on one hand, if you've received CoPR once then chances are good you can do so again after letting it lapse. on the other hand, if you can afford to pay all the fees again a second time, maybe you can afford to, instead, visit your wife once in a while until you're ready to move permanently?

it's best to weigh multiple opinions, and mine is that the risk of being heavily scrutinized for condition 51 compliance is low as long as you make the effort to set up your new life with your wife as soon as possible. there are people who go to canada just to land, then return to their home countries to settle their affairs before living in canada permanently. (although, admittedly, i haven't heard of anyone doing this for more than a few months.) try to maintain some sort of second residence at your wife's place even if you're only there occasionally, and use her address whenever possible. set up joint bank accounts, etc. keep logs of your communications and visits so that you can prove, if CIC really does inquire, that your relationship stayed legitimate even when you were apart.

also, remember that the cohabitation can be anywhere in the world, not just in canada. maybe your wife can stay with you in your home country between semesters?
