Dear guys:
This year is the first time for me to try immigration to Canada from Shanghai, China, partly influenced by former colleague, who compained about polluted environment, unsafe food, fierce competition, unfare education resources for kids, and more free, which attracts me the most.
Although I've summited appls at end of May, I'm still hesitate if I should continue, since I've been in Shanghai for 10 years n feel happy being here, n I also can see lots of Indian &Pakistan colleagues happly living in this city.
Could you guys from other countries share ur reasons of immigration, and the major impact would happen after immigration to your life?
Thanks!

I am not sure if it is entirely relevant, but may be the following answer from Master Qorax will help you, although it is written in a different context i.e. Gulf vs Canada.

Dubai Vs. Canada
Is the migration worth it?

-R u a citizen of the country where u presently live?
-Can u get the Nationality of that country, if u r an Expatriate?
-Can u stay/reside till "eternity" in that country?
-Can u do whatever u want there, even if it's not illegal?
-Can u buy a house "in a year" in that country?
-Even if u r less qualified or underemployed, can u think of buying a house?
-Will u get pension after your haytime is past in your current country?
-R u entitled to "unemployment insurance" there?
-Can your children be called First Country Citizens there?
-Can u vote & get to elect your representative at the senate (in 4 yrs.)?
-Would u get to meet your MP - for personal matters?
-Does your child receive Free Education now (& a good one at that)?
-Do u all receive Free Healthcare in that nation (& the best too)?
-Do u like to reside in Asia rather than North Americas?
-Do u believe in equality of man & get it there?
-R u treated at par there alongwith the nationals?
-Can u still hold your head high under dire straits?
-Does the Cop call u "Sir" even while u r being ticketed?
-Can u purchase 50% of your goods there at cheaper rates than here?
-Could u buy a good used Merc in about $12000? And a fairly new one in about $22K?
-Do u get your merchandize locally made or from EU/US, rather than China?
-Can u get homegrown foodstuff (& organic too), not imported?
-Can u be least bothered about landlords increasing your rents?
-Can u be assured about Minimum Wages there?
-Can u go into Collective Bargaining with your employer?
-How about being self-employed, w/out the hassle of owenership/sponsorship?
-Do u receive about $300-500/child as Free Allowance every month?
-If u get disabled (God Forbid), can u call the Public Bus to your home doorstep?
-Can u daily bike to "whispering meadows" & live healthier?
-Does your patio open to natural greenery, all around?
-Can u come to your home basement & catch the Subway, w/out leaving the bldg?
-Can u call the world over in $30/month, unlimited?
-If u r a single lady, will u be assured of safety & opportunities by your Govt?
-Can your wife be assured of Govtl. Support if u pass away (God Forbid) uninsured?

Uhh... I could go on, but u'd be bored & awed further...

If most answers to the above is "Yes"... Then stay on in Dubai.
If 50% of them is "No"... Then Welcome to Canada!

My primary reason for wanting to immigrate is to give my kid more opportunities. Don't get me wrong, I can send my son to good schools. I can feed him well. Basically, I can give him a good life here in the Philippines. But then again, there are more opportunities out there. I would gamble now while i'm still young and still do something about it if something bad happens than wait when i'm older and then leave my family in shambles because I can no longer do anything.

You and me both quietdom. I could relate to that. Me and my wife thinks so too. I don't want to regret anything for the future of my family. We could do something right now and it would be our legacy to our kids. We did our part in terms of document completion and finding the right guidance from an agency. lets hope and pray that all this would come to fruition.

Ok Quitedom,
Good for you. I see you are trying to think alsoo about your family as a whole. You are not a selfish member of the family. I have lived and worked in different countries including China. i worked in China for 5 years and now i am in Canada. if you are coming for the rest of the family and the future of your kids do come that i assure you , you will never regret it. But if you are thinking of making money china would be the best place, taxes are very low, housing and food is cheap.

At the end of the day i am here with my child and she loves it here and i am happy for her. That is basically what keeps me going. I just landed new and still trying to put my feet on the ground and know all will be fine , it takes time but sure all will be fine.

You make your decision and hope this helps.

Everything for the family. Yeah, i know China is a growing economy. I've been there a few times to visit factories (my ex-boss brought all managers to visit the suppliers) and i see the developments. I've read blogs that tell people not to immigrate to Canada, reading them gave me the push to go forward with this application. Reverse psychology, yeah? I have my fingers crossed right now. Hoping that my application is approved the soonest.

Social security is the main reason for my case. And ofcourse my family and children's future in terms of quality education, healthcare is also important. I guess it is different for each country!

For my children - to give them more opportunities in life.

There could be many reasons for one to decide on immigrating to Canada such as pollution free environment, good infrastructure, better future for the kids, awesome natural beauty, law and order, etc. But healthcare? Certainly not. Canadian healthcare system is in shambles.

Thommo, no perfect country in this world that provides what we want. But the bottomline, Canada is better than India aye? Did you think about it?

Whatever experience we have in Canada, still it is our option and decesion. Canada does not force us to migrate.

Peace! :)

Better use this opportunity for applying @ a younger age as you can stay and check the place for 4 years and exit after that with a new global roaming passport if your not satisfied there .... thats what most middle-east expats do

Did i say India is better than Canada? Or Canada is forcing immigration on others? I listed a lot of positives about Canada and one of its minus points. Those who have to wait for months to get appointment with a specialist or in some cases travel to their native countries to get emergency medical attention can only appreciate whatever i wrote about the healthcare system in Canada.

Canada is definitely a country to settle down for better quality of life. Immigrants who come here with sole aim of getting Canadian passport and then leaving are making Canadian authorities wary. This is leading to much longer waiting time for grant of citizenship and even renewal of PR card for those who just about complete mandatory stay of 730 days in 5 year period, is becoming difficult.

Canadian Healthcare system is one among the best in the world.
The only negative point is the 'wait times', and now measures are being taken to reduce this.
God Bless Canada!
