Today i got an email from CIC-Ottawa asking me to send photo copy of my son's passport. I was expecting them to ask for original but they requested for photocopy. Has anyone got such email from CIC ? Seems like the process for issuing PR for visa exempt country is different from visa required country. It is because, I was asked to send my original passport when they issued PR to me, but in the case of my son, who is a US citizen, they are asking me to send only the photo copy... !! Here is email send from CIC....

"Dear Kool1:

This is in reference to your application for permanent residence in Canada as a member of the family class. We have now completed the initial assessment of your application, and expect to finalize your application without a personal interview. While an interview does not appear necessary at this time, we reserve the right to call you to an interview, should this become necessary at some future stage in processing.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY ALL OF THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION BEFORE PROCEEDING FURTHER. YOUR APPLICATION WILL BE FINALIZED BY THE CASE PROCESSING PILOT – OTTAWA (“CPP-O”).

In order to continue processing your application, the following is required:

Ø «Requested_Items»
Ø COPY OR SCANNED IMAGE of your passport and passports of your accompanying family members, as noted below.

Please note:
All documents must be accompanied by English or French translations. When original documents are requested, notarised documents are not acceptable.

Passport Copies:
You are a citizen of a country that is exempted from obtaining a visa to visit Canada under Regulation 190 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations. You are therefore required to send only a copy or scanned image of the photo page of your passport and of any pages indicating a validity extension or change to your personal information. You must submit these copies/scans for yourself and for all your accompanying family member(s).
DO NOT SEND YOUR ORIGINAL PASSPORT(S). We require copies of a VALID passport for yourself and every accompanying family member. Please note that permanent resident visas cannot be issued on Diplomatic, Official or Military passports. "

As stated in the letter you received, since your son holds a passport from a visa exempt country, CIC doesn't need the actual passport - just the photocopy. What you're experiencing is normal.

I've seen quite a few people on the forums that have gotten the same request. Seems if CPP-O is finalizing, they just don't need your actual passport. Hopefully that means the CoPR will come faster! Good luck!

I don't see how the CoPR would come any faster, I mean you are still having to copy and mail the pages to them they still have to look over them and issue the visa same way they would with the passport...

Maybe I'm being optimistic , but as they ask for the passport copies to be scanned and sent by email, they get the passport faster. Plus, there is no additional handling of needing to get the passport sent back.

You are probably right- but I'm hoping for the best! :)

Umm yes it asks for scanned or copied PP but I read nowhere about e-mailing the passport of all the letters I have seen posted this is the only one that doesn't have the last line of the letter included in the CCP, the last line says....

Please submit all the requested items together in a single package. Please quote your complete application number on your correspondence and address your correspondence to CPP-O at the address indicated below.
So it still has to be snail mailed in.... therefore taking the same exact route as an original PP.

Oh I see what you mean. The only document requested from me was the passport copy (we paid all fees upfront) and my email included this line:

" If no original documents have been requested, you may submit copies of your documents by mail, by fax, or as scanned images attached to an email to CPP-O at the contact information noted below. "

That color highlighting is from the original email from CPP- so yeah, I emailed them my passport images. (Not that I've heard anything back yet either).
