What to do? the programming of form IMM0008 has more problems than just this 'Family name(s) exactly as shown on passport..' - but this is a significant one! for example, my spouse's family name exactly as shown on passport is, 王 / WANG - as such, the validating programming of the form filing will not allow Chinese characters.., and will not allow a space before the name so she could hand write it in the proper order. So, we have reversed the placement of (handwritten)Chinese script and Pinyin, i.e., WANG 王 -any ideas on this anyone? Should we also include the / between the names?

This also a problem on form IMM1344

Thanks much in advance of your responses! ::)

If I'm not mistaken, on the form, there is a space for writing in your own language.
so in the Name field, you can put the Pinyin version of her name - that will become her name in Canada once she becomes a PR - WANG. then, in the space allowing you to write in your own language, you can write the Chinese character for it.

Thanks...., yes, there is much space left after the names, but my question specifically is with regard to, "exactly as shown on passport" - hers will be "reversed" and not exactly as shown on passport.... is CIC really particular on this issue?

I suppose that CIC is aware that you can not have the name as written in the passport. The "exactly as written" applies more in the case where people have various names, hyphenated or not. In your case, it's just a transcription in a latin script of the Chinese name - it's not a different name, or various parts of the name.

:) Thanks again

Just a follow up note for those in a similar situation; I called CIC yesterday, and after going through all the automated phone choices (!) had to only wait about 15 minutes and was transferred twice to a more knowledgeable resource - who said, the Chinese character names were not needed on either the IMM0008 or IMM1344 - so, "Exactly as shown on passport" should actually read, "the 'Latin alphabet' (or Pinyin) version of your name - exactly as shown on your passport.."

The whole catalogue of forms could really use an updated rewrite, or at least some editing via the "country specific" instructions... so many ambiguous phrases!

I believe that the Schedule A Background / Declaration form is the only one that allows you to write your name in your own language after the english name.

Yes.., True and clear on that one

As soon as you are done with your forms, the relief of not being 100% confused 24/7 is going to be amazing. Greatest feeling ever! I was unsure of about 25% of dates and names on the different forms but once it is sent in, screw it! I'm done!
