Hello everyone,

I left Canada before getting my Post-Graduate Work Permit this year and my brother mailed it to me. It is valid and I still have a valid Student Visa.
Will I be able to re-enter Canada with a valid PGWP and a valid Student Visa or do I have to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa?

I'd be grateful if someone could give me the right answer! Thanks. :)

a valid student visa in your passport is okay!!

If you had a single entry trv beofre, you need to apply for a new one. You can't get into canada without one.

I don't have a TRV though, I still have a valid Student Visa. So the latter wouldn't work for re-entry along with my Work Permit?
I should apply for a TRV if I enter with a Work Permit then?

Thanks!!

Once you have a PGWP I'm pretty sure it cancels your Study Permit. With that said, neither will give you entry to Canada, it says that on the document. You need a valid Visa.

Unless if you have a multiple entry trv in your passport. As every one has stated here, pgwp or student visa doesn't grant you entry to canada.

I have the same problem....

Isn't TRV and student visa the same? I am positive that student permit and student visa are not the same.
Two different things:

TRV - Sticker in your passport
Student/Work Permit - Paper permit

You need a TRV if your country requires a Visa to visit/enter Canada. You need a permit to have legal status in the country. Usually when you apply for your student permit, you get both the TRV and Permit at the same time. However when you graduate and get your PGWP, they do not automatically renew your TRV. You need to apply for your TRV renewal separately.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Seton.

Can you help me with this one:
Can I enter Canada with a valid TRV (student written on it) and a valid PGWP?
My student permit is expiring in a couple of months but my TRV (student) is expiring in 2013 while my PGWP expires in 2015.

Thanks!

Not sure to be honest - I was in a similar situation, but I happened to renew my TRV before I travelled so I never tested it. I would suggest calling the call centre.

Using an educated guess, I think you should be able to travel on the TRV once it hasn't expired (regardless if it says student). The TRV just allows you to enter Canada, but your status is based on the permit. However this is a guess and I would recommend seeing if the call centre can clarify this for you.

Hi,

Were you able to enter Canada using your student TRV as well as PGWP? Did you face any issues?

Thanks for your response in advance!

Hey, I am in the exact same situation now. Valid PGWP. Valid Multiple entry Student TRV. Did you test it out? Multiple agents at CIC couldn't answer my query. I want to travel to the US for a week or so. I still have two months left before my TRV expires.

A TRV is a TRV. All that matters is that it is valid.

Hi. Are you absolutely sure? if so, how? I spoke to multiple people at CIC and they seemed extremely unsure. They even asked me to call Border Customs. I did that twice (two different offices) and they asked me to call back Immigration CIC. This is extremely disheartening and frustrating. One would think more people would've had this query before because almost everyone who comes here to study gets a PGWP afterwards.

Yes, absolutely sure. Immigration law which I am not going to search for right now and previous experience on this forum. If you search, you will find countless threads about this topic.
