I came to Canada as a student and I have a valid work permit but my original student TRV has expired. I had contacted CIC and they have confirmed to me that I can re-enter Canada based on my work permit if I travel by AIR as I am going to US only, but I need to know about what happens in airport. Please share your airport experiences. I went through this another thread, and one of them wrote this at http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/visa-expired-but-have-valid-work-permit-can-i-reenter-canada-after-visiting-us-t99415.15.html :

"at the airport in Canada, us border agent will stick to your passport a special sticker that you must provide to the airline company as a proof that you do not need a visa to re-enter Canada. No companies are allowed to let you enter a flight without the visa or that sticker. that sticker must be shown to flight attendant at the boarding when on your way back to Canada. you must also show that sticker to the immigration officer at the airport of entry that will then verify your passport if your havent visited other countries. Mexico is not allowed."

What's this special sticker and if by any chance can I get more information about it? Please share your experiences.

Also, apart from my valid work permit, do I also need to carry my expired student permit as I have original student TRV (expired) in my passport.

1. Assuming your require a TRV to enter Canada, you will need a new TRV obtained overseas to re-enter Canada.
2. The only exception is if your traveled only to the US or St. Pierre et Miquelon, you would be re-admitted on the strength of your work permit.
3. The "special sticker" is a TRV, which you apply for at an overseas office, unless you follow into the category in No. 2 above.

I am not sure about this special sticker. But as far as I know, you definitely need a valid TRV to re-enter Canada. My student TRV was expired too and now I am also a worker here in Canada and I already got my TRV before leaving Canada to re-enter.

Sorry to mention above, I'm going to Florida and coming back to Canada...and I suppose the person isn't talking about TRV as a special sticker....It's some other sticker pasted at the back of the passport after they check visa conditions by US officials....I'm just the experiences. I know the rules...I have US visitor visa..Just asking how everything goes at the airport.

I was in a similar situation 3 weeks ago when I made a trip to Boston. I have a valid study permit and work permit so I took those along with a letter from my university stating that I am a student, pay cheques from my employer and letter of employment as proof of ties to Canada. I also printed out the web page on the CIC website which states that we do not need a valid TRV to re-enter Canada.

I had no problems going to the U.S, but on my way back I was stopped at the Boston airport just before I boarded the flight and I was asked about the fact that I did not have a visa. I showed them my valid study permit and work permit and they initially seemed reluctant but after a while, they let me board the flight. Upon arrival in Toronto, the immigration officer asked no questions.

I was not given any sticker at any point in time.

Yes, you can re-enter Canada on a valid Work Permit(since you are just visiting US). I have done this couple of times(by road though). I know few friends who have came through AIR also. The only issue coming via AIR is that the flight company doesn't know about this exception and sometimes you might have to spend some time explaining them about this exception. I will recommend that you take all the supporting documents along so that you don't get into any trouble.
