Hi all,

So I became a Canadian PR (landed a few months ago) and came back to the US to wrap up some things before moving there. I applied for a PR travel document since my PR card was taking longer than usual due to photo problems so I needed a PR TD to re-enter. I will be traveling next week to Canada.

To my pleasant surprise, I got a multiple entry PR Travel document valid for 1 year, so I booked a return flight as well to USA after a week staying there there since I still have some stuff to finish up here before I go back (I was going to ask a friend to wrap up things here on my behalf but now I can do it on my own). Now I have the following questions:

1) Is my valid passport and PR TD sufficient for re-entry? (I will also be carrying my CoPR just in case they ask for it).

2) Since I have multiple entry PR TD I can go back and forth till it's valid, correct? Or will they raise any objection? I will be meeting my residency obligation as I became a PR only a few months ago.

Anything else or any weird experiences anyone has faced even after having all documents?

Thanks in advance.

CBSA Officer can cancel that entry/visa any time as PRTD is a one time thing I believe. It can play out either way i.e. it may or may not depending upon the officer. It depends upon if you are doing air travel or land travel. If doing land travel, it is easier because once you are the border your status can be verified with your COPR albeit in secondary.
With air, it is a no if CBSA cancels visa depending upon how it plays out above. COPR holds no value at airport.

Have a look at the end of this page:

Short answers:

  1. Yes. You’ll be fine with those.
  2. IRCC does issue multiple entry PRTD’s to certain people (often to people married to Canadian citizens living overseas). It’s doubtful CBSA will cancel it, so you can use it as often as you want, but CBSA may eventually inquire why you aren’t using your pr card. Assuming you have a US passport, you can travel on the strength of a US passport (air, sea, land) without a PRTD. CBSA can confirm your status at entry.
  3. As far as RO goes, you have lots of time left. As long as you meet the 2/5 requirement in the first 5 years you’ll be fine.
Ok, a bit longer than anticipated.

I'm a bit confused. This is not my landing, that happened a few months ago. My PRTD is a multiple entry visa with a one year validity (it says "Multiple" under number of entries), why will they cancel it? I'm traveling by air therefore I need the PRTD to board the flight. At the port of entry I will have both my PRTD and CoPR.

1. Thanks
2. I hold an Indian passport thus I need PRTD to board flight. If they do enquire why I don't have my PR card (either in this or the next trip) I can show them the email printout from CIC that asked for new PR photos that delayed the process (I was going to collect my PR card from the given address in this trip but it might not have arrived yet).
3. Thanks
