Re-enter Canada on Visitor Record or renewed tourist visa after 3 months out of country??

I'm currently in Canada living with my partner and want to leave for the US for 3 months and come back. I've just started my Visitor Record (visa) and waiting for Permanent Residency to come through. CIC class, not common law, but we are a common-law couple. I can't count on that being processed whilst away and would need to re-enter Canada on some form of tourist visa. Does anyone know if I can come back into Canada using my Visitor Record or will it be a new tourist visa? If so, will they give me one if I've only been away for three months?

You can't be living with your spouse if you are a visitor. Always up to CBSA if you are allowed back into Canada as a visitor. Assume you applied for sponsorship outland. It is always a risk leaving Canada in your position since it doesn't sound like you have many ties to your home country like employment, home, etc.

That seems very strange... I arrived here on a tourist visa specifically to be with my partner and live together, as I told the boarder officer when entering.

I have a job pending in my home country and plenty of money saved up.

The CBSA officer looked the other way and considered it dual intent. What you did was visiting her longterm. Did you show up with all your belongings? That would likely have caused an issue. It is always up to CBSA when entering Canada but in general it is best to limit how many times you interact with the border when waiting for sponsorship so would wait in Canada until you get your PR. interactions the bigger potential for problems. Although you can usually count time spent with your Canadian spouse abroad towards your RO people can run into issues if you relocate right after getting PR due to the non-Canadian's job or established life in their home country. Assume you applied for outland sponsorship if you plan on being in the US for 3 months. If you applied inland you are required to remain in Canada although a short vacation of 2-3 weeks seem to be overlooked.
