HI

Good day

I am new here in the forum and have some questions that hopefully some of you can help me. My boyfriend is currently in Canada as a live in caregiver and planning to get a PR there. My questions are will a change in his marital status prior to filing his PR affect his application. Is the change of status before filing for PR will process longer compared to processing it without status change?

Thank you.

Yes in general it will take a bit longer, since once married the PR application will now include you, and CIC will need to review your history, medical, police check, background check, etc etc.

He can always start his PR process as single. Then if you get married anytime before he lands as a PR, or if you live together 12 consecutive months to become common-law before he lands as PR, you need to be added to his application. Failure to do so would result in you being banned permanently under family class through him.

If you wait until after he gets PR, then get married, then he can sponsor you for PR under regular spousal sponsorship application. Time to process will depend on visa office you use.
