Good Day

Sent my application to sponsor my American wife through outland application in April.

Received a first email saying " we have received your application".

Now i have received a second email with an attachement. The attachement says that i have met the requirements and that i have been approved to sponsor my wife and that the application has been sent to CPC-ottawa.

Whats the next step ? how long does it take for CPC - ottawa to approve and my wife to receive PR card?

thank you

The first part is complete. The 2nd part involves determining whether your wife qualifies. If it's straight-forward case, it'll be fairly quick. You can check past experiences (and current ones) in other discussion threads, including spreadsheet where others have filled in the details of their process. You can get an idea how long it takes by comparing to other US applicants.

The next step is simply to wait, and check diligently that email did not end up in the SPAM box.

For some people, they never get any more communication until they get the COPR in the mail. For some, there would be emails asking for further documents or updates, etc. eCas is often not reliable source of updated status.

By the way, from now on, communication from CIC will go to your wife, not to you, unless you both filled in the same email address. Again, do pay attention that the emails do not end up in the SPAM box. It happened to us. I got the sponsorship approval email without any problems, but my wife's email ended up in the SPAM box without her knowing it.

My wife assumed I would be getting all communications given that the first few were sent to my e-mail.
I had to remind her of the 'junk mail' folder as well :) Hope we didn't miss anything..

Just in case, I wrote to the Warsaw VO and asked about the status of her application & if there is anything they could tell us that would help in planning our move.

Cheers.

The VO may not respond to your questions about missed emails. The only way to be sure is to order GCMS notes, as communication would be recorded there. That's how we found out.

hey guys, if you're using gmail, then there's a way to temporarily disable the spam filter. i've done this for both my email and my wife's email.

see here: https://c-command.com/spamsieve/help/turning-off-the-gmail-s

YIKES!

I had no idea this was case. Accordingly, I have asked my wife to check her email and spam box. I think it's bizarre that CIC doesn't explain these things.

Actually, CIC has reminders that applicants need to be sure to check and guard against emails ending up in SPAM email boxes. So no, CIC has done it's part to remind applicants, but these things can still happen.

Actually, I meant that I had no idea they email only the principal applicant after sponsorship has been approved and the file has been sent to the VO.

Sometimes we forget that in a country like Canada which takes information privacy seriously, they separate spouses very clearly. For example, if the sponsor is not appointed as representative, he/she is not authorized to ask anything on behalf of the applicant. The inquiry comes back saying "we do not have any records that you are authorized..."

In many countries, the governments can be quite relaxed about letting the spouse get information from each other even without written approval.

That makes sense, although it's a little odd that the sponsor is not informed that a decision has been made, or when it's no longer possible to withdraw sponsorship. I would think the sponsor has a right to know when they have passed the point no return.

yikes, but wouldn't the status change do decision made even if any e-mails to my wife went to spam? Unless the VO requested additional info and the e-mails went to her this would be a problem.

I'm in Poland right now, do you think i can receive the GCMS notes here or should I have them sent to my Canadian address & have a family member scan them for me?

I assume you are Canadian citizen as you are applying for family sponsorship while outside Canada.

Just search for "How to make a request under the Access to Information Act", and the top hit in Google should be a CIC website. Other websites may help you order notes, but charge a lot more money.

Hit apply online, and follow the instructions, fill in the necessary information. You can fill in your current address outside Canada if that's where you live now. You do not have to be in Canada to order GCMS notes. Order the notes in electronic form, and have that delivered to your email address. Do not order paper notes.

You'll need to scan your passport, form IMM5744 (which your wife needs to sign to authorize you to receive the information, and you as the spouse signs in the spouse section to be on the safe side as there would be information pertaining to you as the spouse) signed and filled out, and upload these 2 into the system as part of the online application. Have a credit card ready to pay the $5 fee.

Excellent :) Thanks for the hint. Gotta love the digital age :)

One question relating to the IMM5744 form.

Section B of the form lists "If you are also seeking the information of your spouse or common-law partner in your ATIP request, you must indicate their name and signature.

On the other hand, the CIC website states "If you are making a request on behalf of someone else, you must include the Consent for an Access to Information and Personal Information Request (IMM 5744) form. Include this form for each individual listed on your file who is over the age of 18."

As usual, CIC makes things very confusing... Do i include 2 forms or just 1?
Logic tells me that 1 form with both of our signature should be enough, listing my self in section A and my wife in section B, signing, scanning and sending off for processing. On the other hand the website mentioned 1 form for each person :)

Conclusion: I will send 1 form and see what happens :)

Just had to ramble a bit.. sorry :)
