My wife (then fiance) and her son came to Canada in Sept 2011. At the time I bought six months of RBC's Visitors to Canada Health Insurance as that was the length of their visitor's visa. During that time we married and applied for permanent residency for them so I extended the health care while we were going through the residency process. This continued until April 29 2013 when my broker told me that I could not buy any more insurance as this policy was only good for 365 days. So basically RBC took 8 extra months of payments from me for insurance that didn't exist. When I asked for a refund I was told that the agent made a mistake (even though RBC's secure software/website accepted the transactions) and that they would have covered any claim during this time. In looking into it, I've found that when there was a claim in similar situations RBC refunded the premiums and denied the claim. So effectively my family went for 8 months with no health insurance and I'm out well over $1000. I'm wondering how many other visitors to Canada they have ripped off in this manner? I'm considering a small claims court action so any info I can get on this would be appreciated.
