What's the level of racism and discrimination in canada ,especially when it comes to jobs?
And it looks like Canadian dollar is falling against USD.
I also learnt that the tax system in Canada is alarming, mostly help fund "socialism". There are lots of Canadians on welfare. Could that be true?

I'd say rather dig the "canadian experience" thing - it's the Canada's "job racism". You even won't meet most employers and will be sorted out on recruiters stage if you haven't had working experience in Canada before. It's like catch-22. Yes, it's snobbery and prejudice and is very cliquish as they won't want to deal with you even if really need someone to fill the position, just preferring to wait for someone with "canadian experience" and don't take risks.

Seems it's reasonable with professions like MD and engineering or accounting, but credentials recognition could be on better level for sure. Moreover, I'm in the most indifferent to some local experience field - IT and yet, I had experienced the same.

Have worked in very multicultural environments - ppl from all over the globe in one place - never noticed any racism based on ethnicity and skin color, nothing resembling. If you do your job you're alright.

Immigration-wise, the major problems for foreigners are: not fully competent in Canada's official languages (an employer would be wary of hiring someone who cannot speak english/french fluently, specially if the job requires interaction with the public), or not familiar with Canadian culture/work values.

Now, the guy just above said, She did say people will look at her funny because of her accent but of course, this is not preventing her from moving there. Is "looking funny" racism? I don't know. Hard to tell. I guess it depends on what happens afterwards. Is the "looking funny" followed by derrogatory remarks? Then yes. Is it followed by an interest in the person's origins? Then not.

It looks like Canadian dollar is falling against USD.
The Canadian dollar is historically weaker than the USD, in the past couple of years it got stronger, than weaker again. In the past few months, the USD has grown in strenght, as money flows back to the US due to the crisis. Mind you, a weaker currency is not necessarily bad.

I also learnt that the tax system in Canada is alarming, mostly help fund "socialism".
Yes, it's true, have you noticed how there's so much red in Canada's flag? The thing is, Canada's model is one that favors the government's intervention in several areas, most notably, health care and education. So, if you're looking for a country where the government has very little power over the market, Canada's not the place to go.

There are lots of Canadians on welfare. Could that be true?
Yes, it is true. There are lots of Canadians on welfare. But what does that mean? To begin with, what is "lots"?

My first wife, who is Asian did experience racism in Canada. She found that the Asians from different countries often racist towards her. She was often treated poorly in China Town, and it was so bad that i could not go shopping with her. Once the merchants saw her with "whity" they would treat her badly. She was once invited to a party hosted by a Chinese dentist, and ask why there were no white people there, and the host replied that they do not like to be around white people.

So there you have it.

There is a mild form of racism in Canada, though I strongly feel that most people in Canada prefer to get along with others.

I'm sure that there are many more conflicts between newer immigrant groups.

As for getting jobs, yes, if you don't have Canadian experience, it will take some time.

Tax in Canada is not as high as you might think. Canadians do enjoy universal healthcare, and public universities, much of which are the envy of most of the world.

Immigrants face the same and if not more problems in other countries. Should we tale a closer look at the problems in the UK? Bedford anyone?

I wouldn't have any idea what it's like to be not white in Canada but I can vouch for that white immigrants also get discriminated against for being new in the country and for not having the Canadian education and Canadian experience. I know some French people who had immigrated to Quebec, of course fluent in French but they had the same problems. I've heard German people say the same. Only if you are going to a business where there are already a lot of immigrants from your country with the same education or training, in that case, they will already know the value of what you have. Otherwise you have to prove that you are as good or better than a Canadian.

Are there a lot of people on welfare? I really don't know. I know a couple of people who are on welfare/disability but none of them are immigrants. Here in AB, there are plenty of jobs for everybody who is willing to work. So maybe it's not the job you trained for but if you wanted to, it's extremely easy to get on an apprenticeship and be making good money within 2 or 3 years. Some people feel it's beneath them to do an apprenticeship when they already have a college degree in something else. That is their choice.

Welfare really isn't that much if you are trying to support yourself. I have heard from those that I know that it's only $500 a month for a single person, I am not sure how much more you get for kids but $500 is just enough to pay rent if you can even find a place that cheap.

Canada is by no means a welfare state. If you were to lose your job and you get EI, it will be 55% of your gross pay with a roof of some $435 a week. Once you run out of EI, I think the maximum is 35 weeks, you go on welfare, $500 a month. In places where there is high unemployment, people job share in a way that you may work for 6 months, then you get laid off and go on EI and somebody else who was done their EI takes your job.

I'm sure US experience is more useful than most other foreign countries experience. The US is Canada's largest trading partner and the education systems are pretty similar.

I agree, if you already are in the US the experience is the same, you already know that here you been paid by the hour and not by day as many countries do for example.

This video is from Calgary which is in Alberta where white people are by far the majority of the population. If you go to Toronto, you will find that white people in in minority there.

I am a Filipino in Canada and I havent felt any discrimination for my being non-white. In the company where I work, there's a lot of immigrants, the canadians are becoming the minority (no pun) . Canadians are nice people, if you are nice to them too. Now ain't that fair? my word of advise? when in rome...
