In Toronto, whites are a minority as far as I know so it would be less likely to see racism there than in AB where the majority is white. Several years ago, a TV program investigated racism in night clubs in Calgary where black men were often barred from entering, stating reasons such as dress code while white men in similar clothes were allowed in. You can find this here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzcfDInl6XQ Seems to have been originally broadcasted in 2004 and they did an update story in 2006 so 10 years ago. Might have changed since then, who knows.
As for being kicked out of a job without notice, there is a possibility to do that in many provinces. It is called temporary lay off. An employer can send an employee home if he has no work. The employee will get paid what he is owed for the shifts he already worked but after being sent home he is no longer getting paid. He can however apply for EI or look for another job. The employer has a time limit which I know is some provinces is 56-60 days during which time he can call the employee to come back to work. If the employer returns to work or if he refuses to return to work as he has found another job, he is not owed money for a notice period. However, if the employer does not call him back within the time limit, he has to lay him off permanently and in that case, he must pay him for the notice period.
If an employee with seniority is laid off while others are not, he can sue the employer, same if he is not called back to work but others are. Employers who are racist probably would not hire people in the first place that they don't want to employ so no need to lay them off later.
