Hi,

I have a closed work permit valid till March 2020. My spouse is on an OWP with the same validity. I was the primary visa applicant and my spouse was the dependant when we applied.

I want to know what happens to my status if I quit my job. Can I stay on legally as long as my spouse has a job? Does my spouse's employer need to file anything to make him independent of my status?

You can stay as a visitor as long as you had status on your old permit, so March 2020. You just can’t work on that permit unless you get your job back.

While your spouse got their permit because of you, their status once they got the open permit is independent of yours.

If your spouse is working on a job that is currently NOC code 0 A or B, and has three pay stubs, and a marriage certificate, you can get an open work permit at a port of entry until March 2020.

OP will not qualify for an OWP because the spouse has a dependent OWP.
